  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Went to see Shutter Island over the weekend.
Don't really like mental institution thrillers.
This one was interesting.
It very well earns it "R" rating.
Halocaust pictures, executions, human suffering, death and language.

Very graphic at times.

I still haven't decided if I liked it. It was an interesting story, but the violence and death was over the top. It was probably applicable to the story, it wasn't just for show.

So if you like gore, and depressing scenes from the Consentration camps of WWII and other human torment(reasons for people being in the Mental institute for the criminally insane.) then you would probably like it.

****Please warn if you mention the secret twists of this plot.(Spoilers)****

I actually thought the gore and violence was very minimal. It used what little it had very well, which makes it a very good psychological thriller. Some scenes were disturbing, but they were meant to be with good reason and makes it feel more realistic.

I especially loved the werewolves. They totally made the movie!
(Some werewolf movie was playing in the next theater over. Since Shutter Island was a quiet movie, you could hear the growls and howls quite clearly. Kinda ruined the atmosphere a bit at times.)

I ended up appreciating all the characters, especially Leo Dicaprio's character. Depending on how you look at it he's

*SPOILER* a hopeless regressor (goes back to believing he's an FBI agent), a diabolically genius snot faced brat (who tries to get even with his Phsycologists by pretending to revert, therefore damaging their chances of further research on gentle means of rehabilitation), or an extremely intelligent man who outsmarts the system and forgets his guilt (by pretending to revert he gains a lobotomy to forget thfffe fact he killed his wife).
So I personally love the ideas of the second and third options because it shows strength, and I dislike characters in other movies who let the system get the better of them.
I loved this movie because it's thought provoking.

If you havent seen the movie, do NOT check out the spoilers, bc honestly it is part of the experience of the movie, what makes it so good to sit there and wonder what the heck is going on.

I just saw this movie the other night and thought it was the best psychological thriller Ive seen, probably ever. Reminded me of One Flew Over the Coocoo's nest, but darker.

wannabeadesigirl, I thought the same thing as you, the third one ...*spoiler comment* ...the way he went willingly as if he knew what was going on. also some of what went on earlier, as I think back made me think that. At one point when he's talking to the woman in the cave, he's actually imagining her, but they talk about the labotamy procedure and that it erases a man's memory. In the end you are kind of in the same position as Leo's character, wondering who is sane here, who are the baddies! I thought it was genius. II thought all the gore was necessary for the plot, as one pp-er said, to create the right atmosphere. I dont like gratuitous gore in a movie, I find it a cheap tactic and repulsive, Im one of those people who abhor that kind of thing, and really I didnt find the gore in it to be excessive. I think of things like Saving Private Ryan. That was gorey, but it was essential for the plot, to evoke how horrid the circumstances were. Now, what I found scary was the parts that made you jump! It really had me on the edge of my seat without being gratuitous in violence or gore, imho... and Im a conservative wimp when it comes to movies that are gorey. Images stay with me for days!! lol.

I thought it was genius actually. Best movie Ive seen in a long time, and I didnt expect it.

I really liked this movie! It's been a while since I've seen a good psychological thriller. I've never been a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, but he did a great job. Would I own the movie? Absolutely.
