There's been some fascinating research done by Nathan Wilson, son of Douglas Wilson, who "smelled a rat" with the Shroud of Turin and set out to solve the mystery of how it might have been produced. Of course, his research doesn't prove that the Shroud is a phony relic, but it does prove that there's a simple method by which it could have been made. And he's not even a scientist.
It's nice, too, that this was done by a Protestant rather than either a Roman Catholic or an atheist, either of whose worldviews are a little too closely linked to the authenticity of lack thereof of the shroud.
