  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Should we eat cloned animals?

I read in the news that there could be beef from cloned cow available in the market. Is that similar in nature to the genetically modified corn? Is a cloned animal good to eat?

How about Christians? Should a Christian treat cloned animals the same as natural animals?

You already eat cloned animals if you eat commercial beef. Sorry to break it to you.

Potatoes are clones. You eat those, don't you?

If you are referring to genetically modified instead of cloned, I don't really see the problem. Every single cow is born with natural mutations. Nature already genetically modifies each and every cow. On top of that, there is no reason to think that natural is better anyway.

It seems I am very ignorant on this.
Why do I have some bad feeling about eating cloned animal?
Would the meat pack have a label on cloned meat? I think it should have. Make it similar to any genetically modified food.

Yersinia Pestis is 100% natural.

Because the alarmist media is using "cloned" as a scary word. Precisely to play on the fears of people who are not familiar with the biology

I wouldn't imagine so. All "cloned" mens is that it's genetically identical to another animal. There's nothing sinister about it. Cattle producers have been using basic cloning techniques by splitting undifferentiated embryos for literally decades. IIRC, most commercial cattle are bred using IVF, with the embryo splitting technique part of the procedure.

In terms of what you eat, the meat of a "clone" is literally, absolutely, 100% the same as the meat of an animal with an identical twin.

Is a cloned animal genetically modified?
Given that every single domestic animal and crop in existence is "genetically modified", yes. Don't fall into the trap of thinking genetically modified=bad. Unless you eat game or sea caught fish, literally everything you've ever eaten was genetically modified.

Not necessarily. "Clone" means genetically identical. Identical twins are clones since they came from the same fertilized egg and have the same genome. However, identical twins are not genetically modified. Potatoes are clones. When they plant potatoes they put cut up potatoes in the ground instead of using seed. Therefore, it is the same plant regrowing. They are (natural) clones.

Genetically modified means that humans have inserted or removed DNA from the genome, or otherwise changed the DNA sequence. This can be a single gene or group of genes. You can insert that DNA into the parent stock, and the cross breed with other strains of that species. With cattle, you will get a mixture of genes in each offspring. With careful breeding and genetic screening you can select for offspring that are homozygous for the inserted DNA. That is, they carry the inserted DNA on each chromosome. However, they will be heterozygous in many other alleles, as will their offspring. They won't be clones, but they will be genetically modified.

Precisely. The moment that humans applied selective breeding thousands of years ago, we were creating genetically modified strains of those species.

You're using "genetically modified" the way the buzzword alarmist media does. I include selective breeding in the term.

OK, thanks.
May be what you said is what's wrong with a clone. Natural one should have a little bit genetic difference.
My intuitive thinking is: anything which is not natural would have some mistakes hidden in it. (a natural mistake is normal, and is not a mistake)

No. Literally, identical twins occur in nature. Clones are exactly the same. There's absolutely nothing possibly bad about eating cloned meat.
