Should Christians stay away from games with magic in them?

I buddy of mine at work told me that I shouldn't be playing World of Warcraft because of all the magic used in the game. He said the Bible warns us to stay away from that kind of stuff. I personally don't think a videogame is going to make me practice witchcraft or even become interested in it. I think that since it doesn't effect my faith or anything, that it really isn't a problem. Of course I've been wrong before.

Do you think that pressing the fireblast icon in your action bar is an occultic practice?

I don't and enjoy playing WoW.

I wouldn't think so. I play games with 'magic' in them all the time - almost every RPG contains some sort of magic or spells. I don't try to cast spells simply because I do on games. I see violence on games in the same manner. Just as long as you don't let what you do on games affect your faith and personality, there should be no problem.

If a video game can pose a threat to someone's faith... their faith wasn't all that strong to begin with.

Your friend will probably grow old and become a recluse inside of his house, staring outside through the blinds and calling the cops whenever a group of kids walk past.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Video games are great when they have magic because it adds a new level to the gameplay. I think it's a fun idea, but when I put the controller down, I'm back to reality. Yes technically he's right, it talks about witchcraft (magic) in the bible, but that's really talking about REAL magic. Magic in video games is harmless, and actually enjoyable. It's up to you in the end what you want to do, but since you asked us, that's my opinion. Good luck

If it causes you to stumble then yes. If it gets in the way of your experiencing the joy of the Lord, then yes. The Holy Bible is clear to stay away from the occult, the question then becomes do you submit and obey God, or not?

Staying away from the occult doesn't restrict one from having an imgagination or simply playing a game.

I play Diablo, Guildwar, WoW, and fatal frame with other brothers and sisters from Church. I dont see why we can't. We don't use magic in real life to harm people anyway.

I think every game or things that we put our hands on must be controlled in moderation. As long as it won't be a stumble block in our lives (eg, forgo massive quality time supposed to be spent with God or family in order to just satisfy our desire in gaming; or playing day and nite non stop which cause health problem), then that is okay to me.

it depends what magic? black magic in a video game i don't approve of, but stuff like Elf Magic in LOTR games is ok in my books.

As a parent, I guess my greatest concern with RPG's was their addictive nature. Life is to be experienced firsthand, not through RPG's.

well...seems to me both are nothing more than a bunch of pixels moving around on the screen (*cough* my best attempt at using "computer language" >.>). if you want to label it "fire" for the reddish colors, be my guest.
