Should a Christian work in a field they love?

I look at people like David Wood, he is a Christian Apologist, And I look at people who are Biblical scholars. If this can help me gain more understanding in what I believe I would like to pursue it. I don't care if I make little I know I can be happy with $45,000 a year, and I live a very simple life. Right now my career is in business, and although I make a good living, I don't find myself any happier once my income goes above $55,000 a year, I have everything I need already, and can get by just fine. But currently I do not like my job, find it very boring and very stressful.

I may even have plans to give it all back through charity if I don't have anyone to pass my wealth too. The Bible is the most interesting to me, I have been reading and studying it since I was 20, I'm 26 now, and my interest is growing more and more I am hungry to know. I have no more interest in making any more money, I find the deeper I connect with the Bible and prayer the more empowered I feel, not wealth increasing. I want to do everything I can and what God wants me to do before I pass away, I cannot take any material riches with me when I'm gone.

I really like the history side of Christianity, I can imagine myself being a professor at a university teaching religious studies. I remember my 2nd year at college, it was required we take some kind of social studies class, and I chose Religion 101, where the professor introduces you to all the world religions and we learn all about them. That was one of the most fun I had when it came to studying a subject at college. That and also history.

If you want to change fields there's nothing wrong with that. I'd encourage you to consider the demand for people in those position and if the shift would require further education. The practical approach would be starting a YouTube channel with a weekly topic from the bible and sharing your thoughts. You can develop materials to aid with their study to generate income and grow it from there.

If more education is required you'll have the resources and something in place to apply what you've learned. And it may lessen your discontent until you leave. It's possible to grow the channel to the point where it's your new employer. Handle it in prayer and good luck.

You might want to be careful. Sometimes people can take a branch in life because they have a romanticized view of what that branch will be like. Even doing the same job for another company can mean circumstances that are less pleasant.

If you have a curious and inquisitive nature, you might want to look at the blog archive at Christian Pioneer - Blog achive

There are history forums hat provide all sorts of exchange for those very much into history. You might find more enjoyment from a hobby than a career.

prayer . . .

Being good in business can be helpful for church ministry. You can help a pastor or ones in the church. Then because it is first about loving, you can be a lot more satisfied.

In order to be more into helping people, you might need to change to a different situation where you have better connections for ministering, but you are able to use your background experience of dealing with the world.

Oftentimes, when we are in the wrong place as far as a job, God will allow us to become uncomfortable because He wants us to move on. Seek God's guidance on where and what he prefers for you. Sometimes he can be very specific, if he is not then you can ask him for a more rewarding job, place or change of career.

John,

Just an added word of encouragement. Your attitude is spot on. God gave you the gifts and interests you have - for the sole purpose of what your heart is intending - bringing glory to His Name, using the wages received to minister to others, being content with modest living, storing up treasures in Heaven, and bearing fruit for His Kingdom. Whew!

Be prepared, then, for God to give you the desire of your heart. Add to your prayer life a simple petition, wait patiently for Him to guide you in His time and unique way (the route might not always make sense), but expect Him to say "Yes!" - and you will know it!

He has to me, He will to you. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing He is fulfilling your destiny.

Simple prayer:

Psalm 90:17 NIV

"May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands."

God bless!
