This is a vastly overgeneralized (and pretty inaccurate) description of what it's like to be in Computer Science. I've been a software developer for nearly 40 years, and I have *never* developed a commercial website. And I've worked for both big companies and very small ones. There's a lot more to Computer Science than programming websites! If you don't mind programming websites which will be using sex as tool to sell stuff or making games which use violence on animals for the sound effect then you can try it .
The age of making fun websites for clients or forums for small groups is long gone because most of people can set up server / forum themselfes nowdays and blogs are more popular than websites .
So you will end up working for some large company most likelly .

If you are delighting yourself in the LORD like Psalms 37:4 says then God has given you a desire. You should follow it.
Don't let all the nonChristians take over the field of computer science.

Hello thanks for your reply! How has your experience working as a developer been? This is a vastly overgeneralized (and pretty inaccurate) description of what it's like to be in Computer Science. Yes, I dont believe my degree will be checked at the pearly gates either. The CS field......it all depends where you are, who you work for and your own personality. Could be a high paying job, but sometimes stressful and could require changing jobs often.Hello. Thank you for your reply. How has your experience been over the years in the CS field? I am trusting that God will be with me during this journey. This is something new for me, and I don’t really know anyone personally who is in this field, but I believe God will be with me while I go this route. I don’t think the gates of heaven are closed on you because of that! I was just believing nonsense ideas
Hi. My experience as a developer has had its ups & downs. The first half of my career (until the late '90s) was great. I was working for one large company (Digital Equipment Corp.) and loving it. Hi. My experience as a developer has had its ups & downs. The first half of my career (until the late '90s) was great. I was working for one large company (Digital Equipment Corp.) and loving it. Promotions and raises were coming at me, I felt very secure, and I really enjoyed what I was doing.
The second half of my career has been quite challenging. Digital Equipment got bought out by another company and 10s of thousands of people lost their jobs. I quit before I got the axe. I joined a company in another state and turned my attention to programming in Windows. I've been all Microsoft Windows ever since. The economy hasn't been the same since those early years, either. I've worked for about 15 different companies because of either getting laid off, fired, or I quit. This constant moving around turned out to be bad for me. Sure, I got a lot of experience that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise, but I believe I lost out financially. Fortunately, I live in a large enough city that I could *find* 15 other companies, so I was never unemployed for too long (maybe a max of 6 weeks between jobs?).
I'm getting close to retirement now, but the Lord finally put me in a place where I am once again enjoying what I'm doing. (I'm writing code for the middle-tier and back-end of a web application.) I love writing code and always have. I've usually been able to have a job where that was my main emphasis, even though the job might have only lasted 6 months or so.
Tbh, it's a challenging field. The technology is continually changing, and virtually no employers want to pay to have their employees trained any more. From my (perhaps jaded) perspective, it seems that employers hire people until such time as the technology has passed them. If you can't find a way to keep up on your own, your job is at risk.
I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk.
I wish you the best of luck.
I wish I would have studied computer science.I am starting my prerequisites for nursing school this month and I am excited for this journey to become a nurse. however I keep getting this feeling that I should reconsider and maybe go back for my post-bacc in computer science (got my BS in May). I was wondering what do you guys think about a christian studying computer science? It seems silly when I type it out, but I've just been back and forth/on the fence about this field. I have prayed about it, but I need to be more patient and hear from God. I just wanted your biblical opinions on if you think I should avoid it or consider it.
Yeah, this is so wonderful advice. The Lord has given us specific gifts for us to use for His glory. I have been asking Him what I will have to do next, not knowing that He has already asking that question and I am just looking for something else, which is odd. But I keep coming back to this desire to study masters and contribute in research and development particularly in health. Not all of us are called to a full time ministry but we are all called to glorify the Lord in all we do and return the praise for the gifts He has given us.If you are delighting yourself in the LORD like Psalms 37:4 says then God has given you a desire. You should follow it.
