My wife and I are considering having a third child - with two boys already we'd like to have a girl (but will love the child no less if its a boy - just to clarify) so I've been reading Dr. Shettles book to try and get a handle on his theory of conceiving for one gender or another. I was surprised that there is an 80% success rate for boys and 75% success for girls with this. Thats pretty good in my opinion.

So I was curious to know if anyone out there has tried this and had any luck with it - I'd really like to hear your story regardless of wheather you met your goal or not.

I have never heard of this method. The only certain way of producing the desired sex is to have IVF, and I think that is wrong just to produce the sex of choice.

Personally I think that having another child in the hope and expectation of producing the desired sex is not a good reason for bringing a child into the world. However much you say that another boy would be welcome, there is bound to be that frisson of disappointment that the baby is not a girl. You and your wife should only have another baby if you want a baby, whatever its sex.

I have heard one theory that in conception you are twice as likely to concieve a boy then a girl... but twise as likely to miscarry a boy than a girl.... and it is something about the time of conception... you have to be bang on the prime fertile days to concieve a boy... err.... ( or is it a girl.... ) and can be towards the fringes for a girl... lol... not much help me! lol!

Anyway... just do as other folk say! A child is a child! lol! My girl is more like a boy than my son and my son is more like a girl than my daughter! lol! Sometimes you just can't get it 'right' no matter what! ;)

I've heard of this. Even though it's true that it's the sperm that determines the sex of the child, the environment in which the sperm spends its last few hours determines its viability. If I recall correctly, the acidity of the womb affects the viability of male and female sperm differently. So the mother-to-be can adjust her diet, can douche, and can choose a time of the month for intercourse so that the alkalinity or acidity of the womb is maximized to favour sperm-viability for the sex she wants to select.

Actually pmcleanj - you are on the right track - but the main thing with this method is that it is all about timing. According to this method the closer you have intercourse
to ovulation the more chances you are likely to have a boy and if you have intercourse two to three days before ovulation you increase you're likely hood of having a girl - the reason being that the xchromosome (girl producing) sperm is more durable than the ychromosome sperm and can survive a lot longer. Thats pretty much it in a nutshell.

The method seems pretty scientifically sound - all this does is increase your chances of having the desired sex - they are quick to point out nothing is full-proof and that if you follow this method you could still have the undesired gender - however with a 80 percent success rate for boys and 75 percent success rate for girls - those are pretty good odds.

Tagnefedd -

For your information - my wife and I could care less wheather we have a boy or a girl - we are trying this method only because we have two boys already. We want a third child regardless of the gender - but would like to at least try for a girl in the process - especially given the success rate of this method. Your advice though sound, was totally unessary in our case.

My husband and I tried this method and it worked for us. We already had a little boy and tried for a girl. A perfect little girl is just what we got. We are now expecting #3 (unexpectedly).

I thought it was kind of fun to see if it would work or not. :)

Good luck!

I think that anecdotally, with those statistics 80% and 75%, one could show whatever conclusion they wanted. "I got a girl and was trying for one, so it worked." "I got a boy and was trying for a girl, must have been in the other percentage." "I got a boy and wanted a girl, this method is bunk."
