  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Care to share the ethical or moral dilemma you wish to discuss/debate as a result of this (not quite new or particularly surprising) blog post?

As one of the commenters on the blog pointed out the issue with the Catholic church scandals was more than that the abuse occurred, but that the church all the way to the top failed to act appropriately regarding the criminal activities of their employee and that they continued to cover up and fail to remove abusers from situations where they could abuse others not only back when sexual abuse was not talked about or understood but right up to the point when they were called on it.

One site says there are 361,000 churches in America. Another puts the figure at 289,424. Of these, 20,255 are Roman Catholic, Or 7%.
source If there are more sexual offense in protestant churches than Catholic there seems to be a fairly good reason.
Why debate it? Anyone committing sexual offenses is WRONG no matter what denom. And no denom promotes sexual deviancy contrary to popular belief.

Isn't this a bit like saying, "A serial killer has just been charged with 60 murders, 10 more than the most notorious serial killer who killed 40."

Do you think the latter is any better, really?
Does it make his crime pale simply because there were less victims?

This is a case of trying to point the finger at another to believe one's own demonmination isn't so bad, and it's kind of pathetic. It's more depressing that it occurs at all, regardless of the denomination, rather than making one denomination look better than the other.

Well that depends on if the offenses are more in number or more percentage wise. I'm too lazy to read what the blog post says again.

On other notes..your church numbers reminded me that having grown up in a predominantly Catholic area I remember being absolutely floored as a small child to discover that Protestants were not outnumbered by Catholics in other areas of the country. I lived in an area where all the Catholics assumed if you weren't Catholic you were Jewish... "Protestant" confused them.. saying the specific denomination just brought about a confused face.

On Wednesday afternoons "release time" meant most of my public school emptied out to head over to the Catholic school for catechism instruction.. I was always one of 4 or 5 kids left in the classroom for the afternoon. (I remember those afternoons fondly - we did a lot of great activities on those days since the teacher couldn't really introduce new work that was when we did all the science experiments and cooking and what not)

Child molesters often pursue careers/positions that will put them around children and give them authority over them. Priest/preacher is a prime example of this type of position, so it's not exactly mindblowing that they'd use it to find victims. Put on top of it the ability to hold religious guilt over the victims, and it's like a some sort of twisted goldmine for predators.

Point is: be vigilant about your children's safety everywhere, including traditional safety zones like church.

More in number of course. My remark wouldn't make much sense if the percentage was more.

:)
I know that.. but you know a LOT of people don't seem to understand the concept of numbers vs. percentage.. not sure why..
