SERVICE ABOVE SELF
(Mark 10:43-45)
"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This is whom Jesus identified as servants.
Jesus served. It is easy to see that "servanthood" is not the number one priority anymore.
If you want to get ahead in the kingdom of God... serve! In Matthew 20:25-27, Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among
you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Jesus taught servanthood by example. [John 13:12-15] So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your
Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Servanthood requires humility. [Philippians 2:5-6] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was
made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Servanthood means putting others before you. [Philippians 2:3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Following Christ means giving up your life. [Luke 9:2325] And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
God is glorified through servanthood. [Isaiah 49:3] And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
Giving is a form of servanthood. [1 John 3:17] But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
Christian leaders are to be examples of servanthood. [1 Peter 5:1- 3] The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is
among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.
Christian servanthood involves serving the widows and orphans. [James 1:27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Serving the poor is as serving God. [Matthew 25:3740] Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw
we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
The local church body no longer meet the needs of the people. Leadership wants to be served instead of serving others. Paul chose to make himself a servant to all people for the sake of the gospel. [1 Corinthians 9:1819] What is my reward then? Verily that, when
I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
A servant of God is gentle and able to teach and be patient. [Timothy 2:24] And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
Being a faithful servant of Christ brings eternal rewards. [Matthew 25:21] His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Thou art inexcusable O man, it's time to serve!
