Did Jesus give us the sermon on the mount to the church for us to know how to live our lives? Or was it given for the Kingdom that is coming to the earth in the future? (thats what i just herd from a sermon) Just wanna know peoples opinions.
If you think who Jesus was talking to, and what He said to them, an important theme emerges.
Primarily Jesus was speaking to Jews, that is people who thought that they could be saved by the law and their own righteousness. Portions of the Sermon on the mount specifically addressed the error of this concept. These folks thought that if they did not commit the sins that they were righteous. Yet Jesus sought to show them that the sin problem was deeper than this. Hate was as much a sin as murder. Lusting in your heart was as much as sin as actually committing the act. Jesus was showing them that they were just fooling themselves about their righteousness. The point was summed up in one statement:

"Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect."

That was the nail in the coffin for anyone who thought they could approach God by obeying the law.

Amen. This point is missed by so many, pastors included. Jesus came to usher in a new covenant that was based on faith in grace of the sacrificial death of Jesus...not based on works of the flesh. You're one of the few who can explain this well, Dids.

This is wrong in so many ways. Never did torah observance become a salvation ticket. It's always been about treating your neighbor as you want to be treated.

The message is not for only jews. Jesus loves everybody. ;)

The closest nt writeings specifically for jews would be the book written to them titled Hebrews. :p
