  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I keep all of my college texts. I'm an English major so I love to read anyways, but I like knowing that I have a book for most any situations that will come into my life. I may never open some of them again, but hey you never know when you'll need a quick lesson on microeconomics or biology or history or whatever else comes into your life.

I've only kept a couple of my textbooks. There was one I sold back that I had wanted to keep, but my husband and I are on a tight budget and needed the money to put gas in the car.

I bought a couple of my books online this year, and saved about $60 from what it would've cost in the bookstore on campus. (Didn't get enough financial aid to get all my books this semester.) I am keeping one of my books, because I am going to need it for a class next semester. So it makes sense to save money and keep it, instead of selling it back only to buy it again.

Where sites do you get your books from when you get them online?

Have you ever sold any of your books online?

I sold some of mine to friends because they asked...I didn't go out and actively try and sell them. However, I sell ones that I will not need later on to study for the MCAT. I also kept a book on how to use SPSS :)
I do not keep books for special interest. If I want them, I'll buy them back in a few years when they're outdated and cheap.

I've kept the vast majority of the books I bought when I was an undergraduate. I majored in physics and math, and I didn't take very many non-major courses (long story, basically I had a lot of college credits coming out of high school). Mine were the sorts of majors where advanced classes build up from earlier coursework, and it really helped to have the ability to review my previous classes. Now as a physics graduate student I'm glad I kept most of my old books. Many of them proved indispensible studying for my PhD qualifier, and they tend to also be useful for my classwork.

But I can see why someone who takes a lot of generals might want to sell their books. Unless you're the type who would read them for fun at a later date, why keep around a book that you'l never use again? Just one word of caution: selling them back to the campus bookstore is effectively throwing them away. You only get back a small fraction of what you paid for it. Books that sell for ~$50 will sometimes only get you enough money for a couple of burritos if you sell them back to the campus bookstore. If you're going to sell your books, I'd recommend putting them up on Ebay. Or better yet, offer them cheap to one of your friends from church. Just don't give them back to your college in exchange for lunch money!

Anyway, just the advice of someone who's been through the whole college thing...

I sold books that I could actually get money back for, but whenever my teachers had us buy a $100 book, I always go back to my school's bookstore website to sell them, and they say they will give me $5 or $0 for the book. It makes me mad. So I keep the books.. even if I hate them.
The only books I kept just because I liked them were my history of East Asia books, because I thought those might come in handy if I ever want to read about it in the future.

If it's books in my major, I tend to keep them. If they aren't, I may or may not. I've sold my texts on ebay, and I've bought my texts on ebay or amazon marketplace for lots cheaper. Sometimes more expensive when I didn't do my homework.
