guess you could say giving up coffee would be self denial??.... especially wen you realise how much of a grip it has on your life... since giving it up about 2 weeks ago i have been able to get alot more sleep... so i dont wanna touch another drop of that stuff...
good idea to get your daughter to take part in the self denial as well you can both keep each other accountable... set some reward/s to give you something to aim for, eg the $$ you save not buying chocolate or pop (is that like coke, pepsi ect?) you can go out for tea with each other hang out do mother daughter stuff... or buy something for someone thats in need.... just a couple of ideas...
good luck with the self denial, let us know when you start & your progress... stay strong. find the reason for doing it and stay focussed on it...

The Self Denial Appeal is an International Appeal for Missionary funding, conducted amongst Salvation Army congregations the world over. Each territory is expected to challenge their congregations to sacrificial giving. For many years now—within the New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga Territory—the practical way this has been encouraged, is for each Salvationist to seriously consider giving One Week's Salary on Missionary Service - hence the coining of the word OWSOMS.
Indeed both terms, SELF DENIAL and OWSOMS, have been used together now for so long that they are considered to be one and the same.
The 2006 Self Denial Appeal launches throughout the territory on Sunday 21 May, and culminates five weeks later with a Missionary Altar Service on Sunday 25 June. Each week in the intervening period a promotional video/DVD and accompanying Bulletin Sheets are used and distributed amongst the congregations. Many people choose to use a five week series of envelopes, thus allowing them to put a contribution into the offering each week towards their ultimate goal of 'One Week's Salary'.

Maybe I will just pretend I am Catholic and do Lent.

I had this really off the wall thought... For self denial we could pick up our cross and deny our lives for the sake of winning souls from eternal damnation with every minute we can muster. Mmmmm, or give up coffee and chocolate...;-)

I think the puropse of giving up the chocolate is to provide money to equip those people working in places I cannot hope to practically reach
I understand, a great idea. Its odd where I am that people do these things but with their day to day life do nothing to get equipped and help reconcile man to God. I know there are soldiers doing both and to them it is a blessing to fight along side for the sake of our Lord's name and the lost.
What an honor it is to be counted in the ranks of the Booths and so many less known named who have bled the ground that we may carry such a banner as our Blood and Fire Standard...

God Bless the Salvation Army,
William

Oh well it seems to happen in Australia too, I remember when my kids were little they still did it and brought in their offering every week. So you keep track of money saved and give it too missions?
Yep happens in OZ. The self denial appeal is also the lead up to the Red Shiels Appeal where one sunday we go doorknocking with (volunteers from the community as well) to raise money for the army's work. When I was younger they used to get volunteers to do it while salvos went to church. Thankfully now they cancel the church service and go collecting themselves as well.
