This past week, I had the opportunity to do quite a bit of driving. While driving I found myself listening to various types of music on the radio. Anyone every notice how so much secular music seems to play with your emotions and often gives you a false since of hope? So many songs talk about love lost and regained, and finding that perfect someone. Anyone else ever notice this?

I've noticed. If people would fill the God-shaped hole in their heart they wouldn't have to place their hope in all those (often times) intangible things. But, in order to do that first they have to realize that they are not center of their life or the universe.

um hum... I agree... I find that all I hear is about perfect relationships... like very unrealistic loves or relationships with people in those songs.
I donno like you said it gives a false sence of hope.. at least I find it does with me.... And dont even get me started on the videos :(

oh I dunno..

yes most of it's tripe but as long as you understand that I think it's ok. I see it more as an acknowledgment of feelings. I mean, we all know that some 17-year-old group of boy singing about forever in their little falsettos... not only do they not really mean "Forever" they might not really mean "girl". LOL

But then, I can hear a spiritual message in some pretty obscure places, secular music being but one.

It's not just a false sense of hope; there is also a false sense of despair readily available from some rock music. Altogether, most secular music paints an unhealthy and unrealistic portrait of life. I just always keep that in mind when I'm listening to it.

Whew! And I thought this was a discussion including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, Debussy, ....

Oh wait, Bach isn't secular, but the others are. I do believe God enjoys watching and listening to us create. I don't listen to pop/rock songs much, so I can't really comment on the nature of that kind of music. However, as long as the lyrics aren't promoting violence, discrimination or the like, secular songs never bothered me.

hahaha, Enslow!! Boy it's good to see another classical music fan. Plus, I love Enslow!

I agree that most of those songs are pretty badly written, but I don't think they're harmful in most cases. Country music is better, I think... they appreciate a goodbye song.

Sometimes in life you just need to wallow, you know? Whether it's wallowing in self-pity or in bliss. As long as you don't stay there too long, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Oh oh, my girlfriend just banned me from the board!

Ha ha! I'm just kidding. I know you were talking about Enslow the character. He's so human!:D I never got into the pop music because I was too stuffy in highschool to listen to pop. I thought it was 'beneath' me. I kinda regret it now because I'm really out of the loop when my friends talk about their favourite artists and such.

Come to think of it, I'm out of the loop when it comes to hardcore classical fans too. I can't even spell Dmitri Shosticovich, no... Dmitri Shosticho.... no, that's not it either... rats.

I think maybe this was my thought when I started this thread. I think many times these songs cause you to wallow when you simply don't need to be doing so.

enslow, call off you girlfriend! I did mean the TV character... and definitely NOT in a sexual way, in any case! ^_^

Don't worry, I can spell Rostropovich but some others are like Xzphysqwuyiz to me.

I listen to pretty much everything... Bach is the best though, because of course not only is he brilliant but he can really sum up the spiritual side of music, too. B Minor Mass = best thing ever, maybe.

Mrstace, that's funny, I prefer country music to pop BECAUSE it's a little less sugary or wallowy... it has some humor and storytelling elements too. But I do know what you mean. The current song about that little 7-year-old dying of whatever "there's room on the streets of heaven, blah blah"... OYYY!!
