I apologize - the title may not be compelling.

I was reading today in Leviticus 18 and on for the next few chapters what Moses was instructed to tell the people. Since lately I've been fascinated with a lot of just good sense information there, I wasn't surprised to find more good information about what will keep a society/community safe for everyone interested in living a decent life.

What I noticed on this reading through was how many times it reads in the format of "here's what God is saying: I am the LORD your God."

It seems to have a kind of rhythm about it, showing up with some degree of regularity: not every verse, but at intervals. I admit it caught my attention. Was God reminding us that by describing how we should and shouldn't live, He was showing us that this indeed is Who He is? Was it a reminder that He isn't just any among the many national gods but was indeed the LORD, the I AM, known as YHWH however that was pronounced then?

I'd be interested in what you think as you read through the chapters of information given to the children/congregation which is in Leviticus 18, 19, and 20. I know you have to wade through a lot of don't-have-sex-with specifics regarding who and when, but that's a total aside to my observation - or so I think.

Why do you suppose God kept that reminder "I am the LORD your God" by repetition in those chapters?

Israel was at heart rebellious. I believe that God was simply reminding them that obedience was not optional - unless they wanted the curses to kick in.

The conventional "the LORD" in English translations renders יהוה‎ in the Hebrew text (transliterated "YHWH"), the proper name of the God of Israel, reconstructed as Yahweh.[3] The translation "God" renders אֱלֹהִים (transliterated "Elohim"), the normal biblical Hebrew word for "god, deity"

The reminder ...

I am the Lord” or “I am the Lord (Yahweh) your God” identifies Him from all other "perceived gods" also used to express His commitment to his promises/actions and His supreme authority.

To remind them of his covenant promise to be their God, pledging to be the protector of his people and the One who provides for their well-being and guarantees their future blessing (Ge 15:1).

I love the Old Testament. What jumps out at me most of all is the parallel of Moses bringing the Israelites out of Egypt, through the wilderness and into the promise land is a lot like today God trying to save us and prepare us for Heaven when He comes again. The 10 Commandments established in the OT shows how we are morally to live- the first 4 commandments show how we are to love and obey God and the last six how we are to love each other. The dietary laws God established during that time are just important today as it was then. One thing is for certain the Lord is our God and knows what is best for us. God bless.
