I was thinking more about the SDA 'state of the dead' beliefs and trying to remember where exactly I heard those came from. It is probably worth looking into some more, but as I understand it this belief that you do not go straight to heaven or hell the moment you die came about out of necessity in order to make the 1844 "investigative judgment" make sense. Basically, you couldn't have people already in heaven or hell when Jesus had not yet entered the 'most Holy' place to start judging everyone. Pretty interesting way to tie up this loophole.

The Bible is clear on the subject...the dead wait in the grave for the resurrection. It's okay for you to believe that the dead wait for the resurrection because it's in the Bible and the Bible came long before EGW.

It's even okay for you to believe the seventh day has been blessed, sanctified and called holy by God even if EGW believes it because it's in the Bible and the Bible came long before EGW. I won't even tell anyone over at the progressive forum. Your secret will be safe with me.

I would much rather be absent from the boby and present with the Lord.

This same Paul taught us when he would be absent from his old beat up body.

1 Thess. 4:15-18 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Why comfort one another if they are already in heaven?

1 Cor. 15:51-54 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory.''

1 Cor. 15:16-23 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming.

Hi, I'm a lurker, and I found this post extremely interesting. To me the Bible is quite clear on the state of the dead, though I still find this an insightful thought none the less.

I can't take credit for the thought because I read it somewhere (forget where). It does kind of feel like a puzzle piece falling into place. I very much doubt the current SDA beliefs on the state of the dead would be as such if not for investigative judgment.
