  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think I've only come across 'Tartarus' in the New Testament apocrypha, but don't have my copy to hand so have done a google search which gives the same (Google)

It is not surprising that in later visions of the same kind the very names of the Greek under-world are ascribed to localities of hell. It is across the river Oceanus. It is called Tartarus, In it is the Acherusian Lake. Notice in this connection that the souls of innocent victims are present along with their murderers to accuse them.
The Apocalypse of Peter (information by Roberts-Donaldson)

Tartarus is another name for Hell.

Also, the Greek for 2 Pt. 2:4 is;

The emboldened word was just transliterated as tartarus but carries the same meaning as 'hell' it would seem.

Edit...

Looked up in my Bible and it says;

"Tartaros (hell) is the prison of the Titans of Greek myth."

Not the first time Greek mythology is used in the NT. This would have carried specific connotations (and does) to those well versed in greek mythology, but has the sense of meaning hell and is just the word chosen by Peter.

Thanks for the tips, the interlinear bible is particularly interesting, but all are valuable for future reference. Curiously, my question stems from the choice of name for a particular music album (and its title track), which since it had a scriptural connection, interested me even moreso -

Thanks -

- Bill
