In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Scott Strapp-Really the Worst Music Artist?

Creed Is...

  • One of the great Rock Bands.

  • An "ok" Rock band, but too Pop Rock.

  • Not really that great, but I don't hate them.

  • Seriously demon spawns of hell out to destroy the fabric of music.

I'm not one to take a joke too seriously, but what is up with all the Creed/Scott Strap hate? Seriously, you would think this guy is like Hitler, Kim Jong Il, and George Bush all rapped into one. I have been hearing this for the last 3 years or so. It seems people are jumping more on the bandwagon, because it is fun to bash the guy.

I'm not huge Scott Strap/Creed fan, but I do like their music. I went to their concert (which was pretty good) and own one greatest hits CD/DVD thing. I don't claim he is the best music artist, but definately not the worst. IMHO. So I have to wonder is it mostly or a joke or do some people seriously hate Creed more than say any boy band, Milli Vanilli, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, or Master P like artist?

I saw on another thread they said they saw a shirt that sais something like "Even Jesus hates Creed." Which is pretty funny, but one has to wonder how did Creed become the whipping boy of the music industry. Were they over hyped and played (I can show a million bands/musicians with that and more), were they that bad musically (again a million better examples)??? I guess it is similar to what Michael Jackson went through (still going through), but that dude is weird. He draws it on himself. Scott Strapp is just the burnt out rock star who wrote a song about his kid that he loves, made some stupid rock star mistakes, and has pretty much stayed out of the lime light. I don't know. Did I miss something?

I'll say it again. I like his music, his lyrics, and his struggles of life (that we all go through). It is funny I can't think of any other musician that has played such significant part of people's conscieousness since the Beatles really. In the years (and few years after) that Creed was around I still hear people say, "wow, that Creed song of this or that brings back good, bad, indifferent memories." Maybe that is why they are hated?

Somewhere between your 2nd and 3rd choices, I think they're mediocre quasi-Christian Pearl Jam knock-off, and don't hate them, but find "pop" is often a near meaningless term pretentious obscurist/indy/harsh music elitists use to condemn bands/songs.

What do you eman by "Pop rock"?

Good question. I didn't really think about it. I just tried to use what other people have said. I think what they mean is that it is rock with not much depth artistically, musically or lyrically. I personally think they have some greater depth than say some Van Halen music, but they are definately not the most artistic or the most diverse musically.

I hope that helps.

Just FYI, it's Scott Stapp, not Strapp. :)

I like him as a singer, and I had a major crush on him for a while...he's quite beautiful. ;)

Creed is okay. I think the reason they're sort of a joke is because people put them in the position of trying to walk the line between Christian genre and secular rock genre.

They never set out to be a Christian band, they never called themselves that or put that label on themselves. But then you get a bunch of Christians who recognize the spiritual tones Scott Stapp's lyrics seem to embrace as, indeed, Christian in nature...and then FANS tried to put a Christian label on the band.

Anyway, IMO Scott Stapp's only mistake was putting too much of himself into his lyrics without considering what the consequences of that might be.

Yes. Maybe not the absolute worst, but certainly on the List.

If he weren't so pretentious, I wouldn't feel the same way. You can be campy, OTT, and bad. But believing one is a "serious" musician, despite all the evidence to the contrary? Doesn't work.

But... yes. He's bad.

Britney can't sing, Jessica I think can, but she records terrible music. Milli Vanilli are so 80s that even if they are tacky, I still embrace them. Britney, Jessica, Milli Vanilli are all karaoke music - but at least they know it.

Creed? Its not fruity enough to be in the karaoke camp category, but its just as BAD as say, Britney.

Creed's first CD was alright, I'll admit. Actually a pretty solid effort except for the Pearl Jam imitating that Scott Stapp has always done. Then they got an ego bigger than what little talent they had, and the last two CDs, Alter Bridge, and Scott's solo stuff as a result are crap. To put it lightly, and within the guidelines here. So unless we're talking about My Own Prison or their Greatest Hits, I don't even bother with them.

Option 3 for me. I have Human Clay (although I think there were maybe only 2 or 3 songs from it I still feel compelled to listen to), and some songs from My Own Prison, but otherwise, meh.

Frankly speaking, though, I would take Creed over any of the other bland alt. hard rock bands that the radio seems plagued with nowadays (and a case could easily be made that Creed was the progenitor of all those bands, seeing as how a disproportionate number of them are signed to Wind-Up Records, but that's not entirely true).

It is hard to say that any band is the "worst." But Creed/Stapp are certainly in the lower echelon. While they may not be much worse than most other "radio rock" artists, they gather more hate for having been totally overexposed and kowtowed to for so many years. That may not be their fault... but it still a valid reason.

It also doesn't help them when the media has praise their guitar player for being excellent and amazing and all of that... when really he's pretty mediocre and bland. Perhaps compared to some of the other "radio rock" bands he does stand out... but compared to the world of guitar players in general? He's not even at the level of some of the people in my local scene.

They are (were) ok....I like the song "My Own Prison", but I like other bands much better.

From what I've read, they have the same issue as bands such as Evanesance (a band a like a lot). They were labeled Christian music or Christian crossover, but maybe they never intended to be.
