• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

My 14 year old son has scoliosis due to Spina Bifida. He had spinal fusion and rod placement this past January. He had an S curve where the top curve was at 112 degrees and the bottom curve was 89 degrees. Now after surgery and with the assistance of the rods his top curve is about 60 degrees and bottom is around 35 degrees. Quite an improvement for him.

Was diagnosed with scoliosis back in the 80's while in middle school. Have one leg longer than the other as well as an actual curvature all it's own in my back. Affects lumbar back (L5 region) and is at a 25 degree curvature.

Also an area which was vulnerable osteoathritis. Doh!

I had scholiosis, I had two rods put in my back about 3 years ago. My curve(s) at it's worst was 48 degrees on the top half and 64 degrees on the lower half. Now after the rods, the doctor got the curves balanced out at 30 degrees. AND...When my spine was straightened, the nerves opened up my eyes improved on both sides and my vision went from 70 for the left eye and 25 on the right, to 40 on the left and 20 on the right...I don't need glasses anymore. AND...My hair got thicker.

I am so glad I found this.. I have scoliosis too.. I am in constant pain, at times I can barely walk. But the funny thing is my doctor has told me time and time again that it is not painful, when I have even shared with him things I have read online that prove him wrong. He has yet to do anything to treat me another then perscribe Celebrex.. The first time I went which was 2yrs ago he measured my curve at 48% and the last time I went which was in Aug. it was at 65%. He even said that when it's that bad it does get worse and should be operated on, but he admitted he was afraid to do surgery on me because of my age and how things can get worse after back surgery. I am scheduled to go back to him in Feb. But I am not sure if I should wait it out or go see another doctor?? Any suggestions???

My doctor is known nation wide for orthopedic problems. Dr. Jeffery Setticerri. He is VERY good. He is in Michigan. You should make an appointment to see this guy.

Thank you... I am in Ohio though, but I am still going try to see what I can do. I wouldn't mind going to Michigan if it's going to help and take my pain away.

I know that osteo-arthritis (degenerative) can cause pain by causing the joints to loose "cushioning". Osteoporosis, a disease which causes the bones to become brittle and prone to fractures, can also cause bone loss. It can also be a reason why one's height is decreasing.

I'm no doctor. But it sounds as if something else is wrong with your back. Scoliosis can make one more prone to certain back problems. And you're doctor should be listening, not ignoring. If he doesn't, mayhaps seek a second opinion. It's your body. Your doctor's not the one dealing with the symptoms.

From my own experience one cannot fully trust doctors. It's best to stay informed regarding the conditions, medicines, treatments. And many doctors are offended when their patients know more than they do. The really good ones encourage the patient to be "in the know" instead.

Yeah I know what you mean about there may be something else with my back. It gets really annoying for me, when I have a lot of problems such as my severe back pain instead of only trying to contact my Orthropedic(know thats probably not spelled right but bare with me) doctor, I have to notify my Neurologist. I have a disease called Hydrosphaleous(water on the brain) and when I have back pain that is a major red flag, esp. with me with my past history in the past 2 yrs. But nothing is wrong in that area that has sparked all this back pain. I am presently awaiting word from my doctor(orthropedic) and they know that if I don't get something done or called back I will go to another doctor.
