  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey everyone, let's take the advice of one of our fellow posters and go hiking!

I'm thinking of making another attempt at Longs Peak. It's been 10 years since the last attempt and I wasn't able to summit due to high winds making the ascent too dangerous to attempt.

Thank you for the inspiration. :) I'm an Eagle Scout and was involved in scouting since I was in Tiger Cubs. I've had some great experiences hiking, and a lot of people these days are missing out. They drive everywhere and camp in RVs. They never see the beauty of the world first-hand because they're too detached from the world.

We experience the world differently when we walk through it, and we see all the details we would have missed if we had been travelling inside a car at 70 miles per hour.

Where is the science?
Take a cue from Darwin and bring a journal with you. Write down your observations. Bring a camera - you're going to see some really cool stuff. Science doesn't just happen in a sterile lab. Get out and experience the world. Call it field work if you must.

I'd love to go hiking but we don't have magnificent rocky mountain ranges where I'm from. It's more lush tropical rainforest covered mountains & I can't go on my own.
You should never hike alone. Always use the buddy system and tell people where you're going and when you'll be back. Don't go hiking unprepared, and stay on marked trails until you have some orienteering experience. You can find great places for hiking on google. :)

I grew up in Iowa, where there were no mountains. Hiking through thick forests can be even more challenging than hiking up mountains. Anywhere you hike, you're bound to see something beautiful - something worth observing. That alone is reward enough. ;)

Good for you!

Are you in their Learning for Life program?
Nope. This is the first I've heard of it. I haven't been involved with a troop since I moved to Arizona.

This looks like a really good program - thanks for letting me know about it.

When I was growing up my dad was always in a hurry to get to where we were going. It took me a long time to figure out that there is a lot to see between here and there. Sometimes the trip is better then the destination.
