  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was curious if any of you have ever attended a school from the ELCA: elementary, middle, high, college, or seminary.
What was your view of the school as a Christian and Lutheran education? How did you think it (if at all) refleced the ELCA. Having attended those schools pre-ELCA merger is still welcome.

I attended Luther college in 91 or 92, but as a non-traditional student, plus I already had a BS from a state school, and some other course from other state schools.

From a Biblical education pov of view, historical criticism dominated, as well as other related methods. Luther College is very much in tune with the ELCA's bibliology. If one came in and was a literalist, it would be very rough I'm afraid.

From a liturgical, and sacred music point of view... the ability to really dig into the high church environment was definitely there. It was not exclusive by any means... but it was cool, if that was ones interest, one could really fly in that arena.

I think Luther College reflected the core beliefs of the ELCA, but unlike the ELCA where there is a lot of diversity within the Lutheran spectra, the conservative voices were for the most part pretty quiet. I think the high church leanings and history had a lot of influence in that domain. Ie it was more likely to find ecumenical students of all faiths than those who leaned towards Haugenism/pietism.
