It is just another example of the balance between non-endorsement of religion and the freedom of religion and speach of students shifted too far to one side. Students should feel free to include religious expression into their art. Too bad the event is past, so there are not anyway to immediately remedy the situation. Perhaps, you could write a letter to the editor describing the situation and tell the band that they should not back down if they have something like this again. There are several organizations that would give them legal representation if they were denied access in the future.

The Christian band could not play because of a skewed vision of religous freedom. Christianity may offend the atheist, but what they do to contrain the Christians may offend the Christians, so what now?

A week or so ago my school held a "battle of the bands," which is a concert of all of the bands from our school. Well any ways we has an assembly a couple of days later with the top two groups from the concert. One of them "Joshua Fire" was a Christian group. Well the district wasn't going to let them play at the assembly because they were a Christian group.

This probably has nothing to do with them being a Christian group, but rather the specific song they were going to play. You wouldn't happen to have the lyrics available would you?

They ended up having to make up another song the night before the assembly to play.

What about the lyrics to this song?

I just found out that the other group was singing something about black magic; I didn't pay attention to the words earlier.

Of course you need to provide the lyrics to this too.

Probably because your friend's view of the other bands song is not all that accurate. The only way to judge if the school's actions were appropriate is to provide us the lyrics of the three songs.

Why is it alright for them to teach evolution in the classroom but not Christianity

Evolution is science. Christian is religion. There are constitutional prohibitions against the government respecting an establishment of religion. There are no constitutional prohibitions against the government respecting an establish of scientific concensus.

no its a scientific theory put forth.

people dont bow down and worship the god of evolution.

and in either case

even if you want to go ahead and call it a belief; it is still scientific in the theory so it can be taught in a science class.

creationism however is engrained in the abrahamic religions. you cannot just seperate it from them and teach it as a single unit.  and different religions also have their own beliefs.  so if you teach the abrahamic view of how the world and people were created you will also have to teach the various pagan views or the hindu view or the ancient greek mythology view.

if you want your kids to learn about abrahamic creationism get them into a theology class or take them to bible school or teach them yourselves for a change instead of trying to force the schools to teach them.  stop being lazy parents (ya i know that was uncalled for but i firmly believe that schools should not be teaching morality to kids.  schools should stick to reading, writing, arithmetic and so on and leave the rest to the parents.  maybe then the children wouldnt turn out so stupid by having their time wasted in these useless and neverending debates).

I think people are just over-sensitive in the U.S. to hurting people's feelings or "corrupting" their minds with other worldly thoughts. It's really stupid that a band cannot express themselves in their music because of some interference from worried suits.

The day Christian Rock becomes a danger to people is the day I grow wings and call myself Gabriel. I happen to think Christian Rock is actually very good, even though I'm not a Christian. I feel sorry for the band because it's restricting their freedom of expression. I mean, how many kids pass Churches on their way to school or hear, read or watch religion in everyday life. I think it's an insult to people's intelligence, especially young people.

evolution is science, like some above said, while Christianity is religion. You could debate that at the creation science or evolution forums. It does seem unfair that you couldn't play a Christian song, as long as there was nothing otherwise offensive. It is art--and compared to what some bands sing, its pretty good.

Actually, it sounds like the school broke the law.  Don't blame atheists because a school administrator who is very likely a christian doesn't understand the law.
