  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your opinion on school vouchers? I personally have mixed feelings

I think that it's time to admit that our public schools are not living up to their expectations. It's not just a money issue, but quality of education. Just look at DC: they spend more money than most places for education, yet they lag so far beyond the rest of the nation. By implementing school vouchers, children who live in lower-income areas can recieve the education they need from a decent school. Also, coming from a kid who couldn't afford to go to anywhere but a public school, I would have loved the opportunity to attend a Catholic school. School vouchers just might have made that possible.

But, at the same time, I think we need to keep Catholic schools intact. Whenever the public school system gets bogged down by anti-Catholic teachings and just a poor school performance altogether, we need to have the option to stay away from the state deems as suitable education. As soon as taxpayer money starts going to fund Catholic schools, the beaurcrats start to have a say in what is being taught in the classroom.

So altogether, I think I would probablly be against school vouchers, unless there was some way to be sure that the state won't interfere with private schools.

Just my two cents. What are your thoughts?

I'm for them, actually I'm for complete seperatoin of school and state. I believe the public school system is damaged beyond repair ( I'd know, I'm still in it), and I believe that we should should just scrap it all together. Competition will lower prices and level the playing field.

The problem with vouchers is that the government is allowed to specify how its money is used - it's pretty much how Congress gets things done these days.

They're not allowed to tell public schools what to teach, since that's a state job, but they are allowed to withhold federal funds if the states don't follow what Congress wants. If we had vouchers for private schools, it wouldn't be long before the states or Congress attaches all sorts of strings to them.

I agree with Travis on separation of school and state, although I disagree that public schools are damaged beyond repair. I think they're working exactly the way they were intended to work.

Since I am a public school teacher, it might surprise you that I agree.

The public education system is bound to secularism and to a philosophy espoused in the various schools of Education within the university archipelago. That philosophy began with John Dewey and the Columbia University School of Education. It is so entrenched that it is career suicide to oppose it within the public system. It is liberal, politically correct, and essentially anti-Catholic.

I may go drive a truck.

My uncle does, and he makes a lot more money than I do.

Maximus, have you ever considered teaching at a Catholic school? Not as much money, but probablly more satisfying.

I certainly have. Until I get the little woman gainfully employed - or win the Lottery - I just cannot afford the cut in pay.

Hopefully, the Lord will make a way.

Still, the big rig sounds pretty good sometimes!
