Thread: The Dying Light

Name: Scarlet Bardsley
Race: Human
Age: 17
Height: 5'3"
Weight:108 pounds

Appearance: Scarlet has always been small, even when she was a child. Always shorter and thinner than other children. Even now, as she's turning into a woman, there isn't much to her figure. She has all the right curves, just...not very much of them. Her eyes are large and round like both her sisters', but a deep hazel instead of green. Her lips are thin, but well-shaped, her smile shy. She can be considered pretty, but is most often described as cute or sweet because of her natural shyness and innocence. Her hair is long, reaching down to her waist as she hasn't cut it since her mother died seven years ago. It's straight and silky, but curls slightly at the ends; brown with occasional strands of deep auburn or even dark blond, making it change colors in different lights. She usually keeps it tied back in either a braid or a ponytail at the nape of her neck, draping it over one shoulder.

Her clothing is made by her sister, Jane, and closely resembles what Jane wears. She does, however, favor wearing a kerchief most of the time on her head, making sure the color matches whatever dress she's wearing. Like her older sisters, she carries a dagger at her waist from living life near the Bulwark, the grip specially designed for her small hands.

Personality: As Scarlet's childhood was in constant upheaval, she's had to learn to adapt to her surroundings and circumstances quickly. She's smart, but can sometimes be naive, especially when it comes to the intentions or motivations of people. Shy and innocent where her older sister Jane is strong and bold, Scarlet tends to be overlooked. But she doesn't mind, taking pleasure in simple things like a morning's ride through the woods, a warm cup of tea on a snowy winter's evening, or a game of hide and seek with her young nephew, Julius. She's also very obedient and eager to please, loving her sisters and nephew dearly. When it comes to men, she's more cautious than anything. Her two older sisters are wary of men, for reasons Scarlet didn't understand until she got older. And consequently, she is too, though not as much since she was never abused in the way Oldwyn and Jane were. Although she does read some fanciful novels and love poems and occasionally dreams of being loved someday, she doesn't reveal this to her sisters because she knows of their past and is afraid of their reaction. Most of the townspeople consider her somewhat simpleminded, because of her personality and because of her slight speech impediment. She stutters at times, mostly with "s" or "th" or "d" sounds, the problem becoming worse if she's nervous. But she's actually very intelligent and insightful. Just...not very outspoken about it.

Background: For her family's history see, Jane Bardsley's profile.

Scarlet doesn't remember much about the day her stepfather died. She simply remembers being led into his bedroom where he closed the door and set her on the bed, laying down with her and kissing her cheeks, telling her they were going to play a fun game. She doesn't remember being frightened, but more curious, as she'd seen her sisters go into his room like this and always wondered what they did. But the next thing she knew, Jane had rushed in and began fighting with him. Oldwyn had come into the room and practically dragged Scarlet out into the hall. There was much screaming and the sound of heavy blows, and Scarlet cried hard with Oldwyn's arms around her. She doesn't recall learning of her stepfather's death, or a funeral. Neither does she remember her mother's funeral, though she does remember crying for her mother at the gravesight after the burial.

After the three sisters were left alone to care for themselves, Scarlet did her best to help Jane around the house and caring for Julius. As she got older, listening to snippets of conversation between Jane and Oldwyn, Scarlet began to piece together what happened to the two girls and what Scarlet's stepfather almost did to her...what Jane saved her from. Her love for her older sisters grew and she was determined to repay them for what they went through for her.

When she was thirteen, she began working outside the home in order to bring in extra food. A few farms over, an older gentleman owned an orchard from which she collected apples, oranges, and pears. The owner allowed her to take home rations each week and then any bruised or crushed ones for the pigs at home. Then, two days a week, she accompanied the gentleman into the main area of the Bulwark where he traded his fruit for other goods, some of which she was allowed to take home. She's done this for four years, helping her sisters out around the house and with Julius, living a simple and yet contented life on the small property the sisters call their home.
