Does anyone over here wear a scapular? How come? Do you wear the cloth or the medal?
I am going to make the beginning. I wear the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. I was invested with it by one of the priests in our parish…and I remember it very fondly. It was placed on me -- over my clothes -- and I went home thus. Shortly after, I exchanged the cloth scapular for the medal because I am very, very allergic to wool. At the moment, I'm wearing the blessed scapular medal together with a miraculous medal on a chain 'round the neck. When it's going to be colder (I somehow like the fall) and I'll be wearing several layers of clothes I plan to wear the cloth scapular somewhere in between…and pray that I don't forget it when I undress or change my clothes. I've also been looking for scapulars that don't itch like *self-censored*, but I haven't found them yet. Strangely, I don't have considerable problems on the chest side…but on my back I get ugly, red spots, often even pus spots.

I was invested with the brown scapular this last Sunday... however, I am allergic to wool, so my skin has not been reacting very kindly to it... I am pleased to hear that it might be possible to wear a medal, though. That might be an idea. :)
D'Ann…you can wear the scapular medal, because you are invested. The medal must have on one side a representation of the Mother of God (not necessesarily of the Mt. Carmel type) and on the other side a representation of Jesus showing his Sacred Heart. The medal must be blessed before use, unlike the cloth scapular. You can always put on a fresh cloth scapular without prior blessing, because it is a habit. But every new medal must be blessed. It is not specified how it must be worn, but it is recommended that you wear it on a chain around your neck. If you are in a situation were you aren't allowed to wear a chain, pin it somewhere to your undergarment with a safety pin.

Annie, that part about needing the scapular medal blessed is innacurate. It is a popular bit of misinformation which i've even repeated myself in the past, however the carmelite order does not require it and they are the authority on the practice of the 3rd order.
Below is an excerpt from the official carmelite order regulations on the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular:

After the reception of the Scapular, the faithful may, for personal reasons, substitute it with a medal showing on one side the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the other Our Lady. Both Scapular and medal may be replaced without having to be blessed again. The members of the Confraternity must at all times devoutly wear the Scapular (or the medal), as a visible sign of their belonging to Mary in the brotherhood of Carmel.

Les,
There are many different scapulars and each has their own purpose and spiritual gifts associated with them. The most common is the brown scapular given by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock on Mt. Carmel in order to save the religious order.
Lay people can be enrolled into the international secular order of carmelites and wear the scapular as a sign of this order and their obligation to follow Christ more closely. To live out the words of St Paul that "It is not I, but Christ who lives in me." Carmelites focus on Mary and Elijah as spiritual examples of contemplitive lives dedicated to holiness and service.
I've only just begun to scratch the surface. More can be read about the order and its charisms here: http://www.ocarm.org/eng/ord4/index.htm

I wear a brown wool scapular, and have a nice little statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on my desk at work...it's a great conversation starter!

I've never had this happen before, but my old scapular got very dingy, so me and my boys buried it in our marian garden. I got a new scapular to wear...I usually shower with the scapular on, but apparently this new one bled!!! I didn't realize it until I was in line for confession before Mass a few weeks ago...I looked down, and there was a big brown circle on my (white) shirt, right over my chest...oh well...
