Just got a call from a guy with an Indian accent. He said that he was a Microsoft agent. I was a bit uneasy:scratch: but I do love to be compliant:blush: so I listened intently. They had gotten some of the automatic reports from my computer & saw that some showed that my email account (he gave the account name correctly) had been hacked.:o Other people he warned were using my computer so he wanted me to download teamview.com app to help me out. I stopped as I was about to run the program & asked why this was necessary since Windows already had software installed that gave their techs remote access to my laptop when I allowed it. His answer was since my laptop was hacked he needed this to get in. He said his id & number would be seen when I ran the software. They were but I googled at the same time to find out if this was legit. I saw that Microsoft never initiates contact through e-mail or phone to fix your computer or get you to use your credit card. I disconnected from the internet & turned off my laptop. I changed some of my passwords to important sites. I'm hoping:bow::bow: I disconnected soon enough not to have to do a complete reinstall of windows.
After going to another Microsoft page I downloaded HitmanPro 30 day free trial to scan my laptop after scanning with malware pro in safe mode. Hitman found a number of tracking cookies and malware that Malware did not find.

Hope I could pay for the full version soon. Ahh, why, Lord, why?:sigh:

You can also uninstall teamviewer. That usually leaves some autorun services behind, so you can type services.msc in the start menu search field, find the service and disable it.

100% scam, they've be hitting me for a few years now. I've known and dealt with people that have lost hundreds of dollars to these criminals.

What amuses me is when they ring me saying it's MS and that they have been alerted to a virus on my computer I break down with laughter and tell them I use Linux - FAIL.

Other times I ask them to hold the line as the computer is in the basement and the idiots are still waiting 30 minutes later. One of the best is when I played a dumb user and he said click on the start button, I said i cant see one - after 10 minutes of being really patient with me I say perhaps i have no start button as I think i have Ubuntu :) I won't repeat what he said before i put the phone down...

You are fairly safe until u part with your money and download the app. Once the app is installed they have access to your PC and will put key loggers (to steal bank details) on there along with all sorts of other nasties.

Telcos have little to fight against this stuff and law enforcement is pretty much useless as it originates in India/Asia regions.

^^Yup! Total Scam! Here in my country they are phoning us too. I've reported them to the fraud unit several times and they keep track of things. I usually play dumb to get as much info out of them as I can and then I report it all. Other times I've even said that I've reported them and I'm wondering why they are still calling me. Quite pathetic. I've even phoned Microsoft and told them to pass on the info to their uppers etc.

They actually had a news segment about it last year because it became a fairly big problem. ...and they are still at it; they phoned me again last week. lol I didn't even have a computer at that time... hp had in for 'repair'.
