hola,

i am curious about whether other religions consider saving yourself for marriage a good thing... Catholicism considers it a very serious sin against chastity to have sex before marriage... i think most Christian denominations consider it a sin also.

also i wanted to know what atheists think about this?

gracias

In the Baha'i Faith sexual relations outside marriage are forbidden:

Concerning the positive aspects of chastity the Universal House of Justice states that the Bahá'í Faith recognizes the value of the sex impulse and holds that the institution of marriage has been established as the channel of its rightful expression. Bahá'ís do not believe that the sex impulse should be suppressed but that it should be regulated and controlled.

Chastity in no way implies withdrawal from human relationships. It liberates people from the tyranny of the ubiquity of sex. A person who is in control of his sexual impulses is enabled to have profound and enduring friendships with many people, both men and women, without ever sullying that unique and priceless bond that should unite man and wife. it is not forbidden in scientology. as long as any relationship (sexual or otherwise) is ethical, there should be no protests. obviously sexual relationships entered into for the wrong reasons or while incapable (mentally, socially, age-wise) of making ethical decisions regarding sex would not fall under "acceptable" pre-marital sex.

If someone wants to remain chaste until marriage, fine. If someone doesn't want to, also fine. As long as all persons involved consent to what happens and handle the sexual stuff responsibly, I don't see any problems.

Here's a follower of at least one ancient faith that has nothing against premarital sex. The Havamal (Odin's advice to humans on how to lead your life, or at least that's what the sagas claim ;)) does advise people against committing adultery, but none of the sagas I know does ban premarital sexual activity.

Of course during the christian times quite a bit of the original sagas got lost, so maybe the original ban got lost too... but speculation of this kind doesn't really lead anywhere :D

however sexual relation out of marriage is bad, to forbid marriage is not good too i think..catholic priests and nuns forbid themselves the marriage and this is against to God given nature of human

Hi Anatolian,

I noticed from your post that you do not have a clear understanding of the Roman Catholic Church's position on why priests and nuns are not allowed to get married and/or have sexual relations. When you become a priest and a nun in the Roman Catholic tradition you are married to Christ.

Catholic Priests and Nuns know absolutely well what they are getting themselves into when they make that lifetime commitment. They are well aware of the "requirements" of being the "bride" of Christ. In fact, the last year before you become a priest or a nun, the Church allows seminarians and sisters to freely mingle with the secular world to see if priesthood and sisterhood is really their calling.

I personally know of a seminarian who in his last year before becoming a priest fell in love with this girl he met, dropped out of the priesthood and later got married. He is now married with two kids, and is a Catholic Religion and Philosophy teacher in the same University where he almost became a priest.

I hope this clarifies any unclarity you have on the subject at hand.

Be well,

Raffster

hi raffster,

There are protestant pastors who are married and still serve God,at least they believe they serve...I think it musnt be a requirement because we may change our opinions and feelings in our life always, there can be some people who is really ready for this but I think all of them cannot be ready..

and what do you think about five thousand sexualy spoiled priests all over the world?

I am saving myself for marriage, but it's not like I have a choice. Nobody likes me...

hola anatolian,

we have different doctrines and practices than protestants... generally speaking our practices are derived from sacred scripture and tradition... there is a passage in Matthew that says some people choose celibacy for the Kingdom of God, which is our scriptural anchor... sacred tradition teaches us that Christ and all the disciples were celibate, so were the holy fathers from the beginning...

and what do you think about five thousand sexualy spoiled priests all over the world?

... i think five thousand is not a correct number at all... the priests who were abusing children or broke their celibacy vows and fell into sin... we believe priests are people just like everybody else and can fall into sin...

it is a horrible tragedy for the entire Church community because we are a family in Christ and when one betrays another the entire community feels pain... i cannot imagine how the victims feel...

i once had a very young seminarian tell me he was in love with me, nothing ever happened (gracias a Dios) but he stalked me for a little while... it was a very traumatic experience and ended very badly...

Celibacy wouldn't be right if the priests and nuns didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Very simply put, if you wanted to join the Marines and were shown how hard it is to become one and you still chose to, then it was a choice YOU made. Like I said, it's really a simple matter of choice. In most Buddhist sects you must become vegetarian if you choose to become a monk -- is that unfair too?

To say that several thousand unhappy priests and/or nuns are goofing around doesn't validate your claim either. If those priests couldn't control their sexual urges so that they become sexually active (even sexually abusive) then they shouldn't have chosen that calling to begin with. Or they should have joined a christian denomination that didn't require celibacy for their priesthood.

It's a choice that they could have opted NOT to take but they still did. The Church has not erred because some sporadic priests have suddenly become uncontrollably "horny" if you must. I think I would have become a priest if I didn't have such strong sensual desires.

I think the entire notion of saving sex before marriage is overblown.

Sex is essentially rubbing particularly sensitive parts of ones body until a biological trigger is pulled and you [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. There's no magic involved, rainbows don't appear when you do it, and the world doesn't end if you *gasp* do it with someone you're not married with. The whole process has been given this sort of mystical, legendary status when it's one of the most simple and ordinary things in the world.
