I always hear from people of faith. ("Even Satan believed in God.")
If you believe in God, you would have to agree with God. If you don't agree with God then you don't Believe in God, if you agree with God then you serve God. If you don't Believe in God then you only serve yourself.
-
"You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!" James 2:1

There is no indication that Satan was among them. in fact i think James is saying to the fallen angeles letting them know that Lucifer was no God.
Demons are insecurely controlled by Satan, demons fear both God and Satan.
Satan has his fallen Angeles convinced that man will worship him, and that Their sentence will never take place.
" In the Beginning there was the word, and the word was with God".

Just for clarification, Satan did not tremble in the presents of God in the book of job. and did not tremble on the mountain with Jesus. Satan did not believe, God would accomplish salvation for mankind. not til the Crucifixion. also did not tremble in the Garden. my point is that Satan did not believe His word and did not believe in God.??

I am a new member and havent found my way around on the site yet..

I think it's more that even Satan knows God exists..and he knows God's power...but it comes out as "satan believes in God" when they say it...the same way people will ask if you "believe in ghosts" when what they're really asking is you you believe they exist

Hello Zambino,

If you do a bible scan on the word "believe" you will find that the biblical definition to the word means to obey God. Satan does not obey God.

I think this is the concept you are saying.

Peace
Steven

NAB JOH 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal. Whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God.
NAB LUK 8:13

13: Those on the rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. They have no root; they believe for a while, but fall away in time of temptation. (MAT 13:20)
INT PSA 78:32

In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.

NAB JOH 12:44

Jesus proclaimed aloud: "Whoever puts faith in me believes not so much in me as in him who sent me; and whoever looks on me is seeing him who sent me. I have come to the world as its light, to keep anyone who believes in me from remaining in the dark. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words already has his judge, namely, the word I have spoken it is that which will condemn him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own; no, the Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to speak. Since I know that his commandment means eternal life, whatever I say is spoken just as he instructed me."

NAB PSA 106:6

We have sinned, we and our fathers; we have committed crimes; we have done wrong. Our fathers in Egypt considered not your wonders; They remembered not your abundant kindness, but rebelled against the Most High at the Red Sea. Yet he saved them for his name's sake, to make known his power. He rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up, and he led them through the deep as through a desert. He saved them from hostile hands and freed them from the hands of the enemy. The waters covered their foes; not one of them was left. Then they believed his words and sang his praises. But soon they forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel. They gave way to craving in the desert and tempted God in the wilderness. He gave them what they asked but sent a wasting disease against them. They envied Moses in the camp, and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the faction of Abiram. Fire broke out against their faction; a flame consumed the wicked. They made a calf in Horeb and adored a molten image; They exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bullock. They forgot the God who had saved them, who had done great deeds in Egypt, Wondrous deeds in the land of Ham, terrible things at the Red Sea. Then he spoke of exterminating them, but Moses, his chosen one, Withstood him in the breach to turn back his destructive wrath. Yet they despised the desirable land; they believed not his word. They murmured in their tents, and obeyed not the voice of the LORD.

James 2:19 is telling you in what context does the word "believe" mean. The first part of James 2:19 says "You believe that there is one God. You do well". "believe" in this instance mean believing in One God, then it says "Even the demons believe--and tremble!" The audience of that passage was to the church not fallen angels. if you read all of James, you see that the audience was a church especially in James 2:14-20 when he says ("What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,' but you do not give them the thins which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith, and I have works.' Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?") when it said "demon" it most certainly could mean Satan as part of that group. It did not define which demon, it seems like it was including all of them, generalizing them.

As for Satan not trembling when he spoke to God in the book of job, it didn't really describe what Satan was going through, it just records the dialog that God and Satan had (plus him walking to and fro on earth). But not only that, but Satan rebelled against God, he most certainly believes in Him otherwise whom would it have been that he rebelled against. He was created as an Archangel and knew of God, so we know that He believes that there is only one true God.

I don't think that when people say "Satan believes in God" they are using it in a Biblical context. Culturally, when we say that we believe something, we mean we acknowledge its existence. Of course Satan knows that Jehovah exists. He also knows that he could never surpass Jehovah's stature. He only said that he would be like the Most High.

I agree with most posts that head knowledge does not mean belief. Head knowledge will not get one to salvation, otherwise Satan would be saved. I think the scripture that best demonstrates this is when Christ is on the cross with 2 thieves. One says to him, 'aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us?' demonstrating head knowledge. The other thief says 'we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, and he hangs innocent on his cross.' demonstrating submission. What does Christ say to the second thief? "Verily I say unto you, today you will be with me in paradise."

As an aside, I love the depiction in "The Passion of the Christ" where the first thief has his eyes plucked out by a raven because it is powerful symbolism, even though artistic license was clearly taken there. Just a hint of the blindness of the unbeliever.

Satan desires to be God. He considers God to be a tyrant, so he does not believe in him in the sense he trusts God's judgment! Of course, Satan does not deny the existance of God(although he is certainly more than willing to lie about it.)

James is used 'believe' simply to mean having a knowledge that something is true. Many people believe that the vegetarian diet is the best but they still eat meat. Including myself. What James is saying is that the devil has a knowledge of God. He knows exactly who God is. He knows that God will be victorious in the end. But his works do not reflect that belief. Therefore his belief is dead. Thats all James is saying.
