I was wondering if anyone here has seen them, and what their thoughs were on both or either of the series
Samurai 7:
based upon Kurasowa's Seven Samurai, it retells the tale of an impoverished village hiring samurai to protect them from bandits. I would have loved to have seen this set in fuedal japan, but alas i didn't make it. In true Japanese anime stylings, the story is set in a post apocalyptic environment, with memories of an epic war still looming in the minds of the people. Beyond just retelling it goes on to tell a some what new tale, one last glorious battle between the rightious samurai and the corrupt emperor. If you are a fan of Kurasowa's work i suggets giving this series a look see.
Samurai Champloo:
The latest offering from the brilliant mind behind Cowboy Bebop; the tale of 3 friends, Mugen, Jin, and Fuu, and thier adventure to find the sunflower samurai. This tale, set in fuedal Japan, is an amalagam of story and music, like CB, but instead of jazz as the musical element, hip-hop is the musical theme. While not a fan of hip-hop myself, i was a little apprehensive about trying the series out, but after watching the first few eps. i was pleasantly surprised. The amazing writing, combined with comic wit; not to mention the awesome sword fights, make for a wonderful tale. A definite worth while watch, especially if you are a fan of rurouni kenshin or other similar samurai stories.
