Quite surprised that nobody has posted something about this historic act of the US president, but I'll gladly step in. Looks like peace in our time is just a couple more phonecalls away.

US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed during their call Tuesday to seek a limited ceasefire against energy and infrastructure targets in Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the White House and the Kremlin.

Both sides published written statements shortly after the lengthy phone call, with the White House describing it as the first step in a “movement to peace” that it hopes will eventually include a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea and a full and lasting end to the fighting.

The White House said negotiations would “begin immediately” on those steps. It was not immediately clear whether Ukraine is on board with the phased ceasefire plan. US Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the readout in a post on X.

So no cease fire really: just not bombing civilian targets?

As if Ukraine is ever going to agree to this ridiculous deal. Russia would get to spend thirty days re-arming themselves while Ukraine can get no assistance from the west in doing the same. Putin is just using the negotiations as a pretense for slowing down aid to Ukraine while Russia re-arms.

And in case Ukranians might miss having their infrastructure bombed, Putin got a nice round of bombings in right after the phone call.

The president had to start somewhere

the half-hearted concessions from Putin were disappointing, but we have to remember that Biden would not negotiate, and was simply going to escalate the war indefinitely

The danger here is that Putin is misunderstanding Trump, and doesn't have a clear grasp of the situation

Trump will make concessions and even put up with a little disrespect, in order to ultimately make a deal. Think of a car salesman who will put up with a difficult customer, but still throw in perks, lower the cost of the car, add free maintenance, etc. --but still wants to make a decent profit on the sale

but if Trump starts to think that he is getting played, that Putin is not negotiating in good faith, and that a deal is unlikely, he will turn on a dime and get nasty. Putin may think he can drag this out and play games--and he would be very, very wrong.

Trump would dump more military hardware into Ukraine, instruct Elon to keep Starling active, and hit Russia with new sanctions. He would then call up the Indian prime-minister as a first step in subverting BRICs and pulling support away from Russia. And that would be it --future phone calls from Putin would go unanswered. A whole lot of people would die in Ukraine, and the war would drag on for another 10 years.

let's hope that doesn't happen

Putin has NEVER negotiated in good faith. He has broken every peace deal with Ukraine in the past.

If Trump doesn’t know that he’s completely going to get played by Putin.

Uninformed opinion right there. With full support from America and Europe Russian forces are demolished in weeks.

Russia at full strength and readiness was unable to knock over the Ukrainian forces months before they had access to modern ordinance and armour.

completely delusional opinion right here

you think the US and Europe are going to directly attack Russia? Pretty sure that would be the end of the world. Not going to happen

likewise, there is no scenario in which Ukraine wins this war, even with all the equipment and money they want --they don't have anywhere near the manpower, training, etc. They have lost ground in the Kursk region and will be expelled from there soon

now Russia won't be able to completely take over Ukraine either, because there would be a guerrilla war, street-to-street fighting, sabotage, etc. --that would go on for years.

Energy infrastructure. We'll see. I get why Putin would agree to that small bit as Ukraine has been setting their oil refineries and fuel depots on fire from Rostov to Moscow.

you do know it was broken almost imediatly so no he didn't make any attempt, so his weak deal that huts ukraine more then putin didn't even last a day.
