Russell Brand has defended himself after sparking controversy for performing a baptism in his underwear, acknowledging that though he is a “bit of a show off,” what matters is whether or not he's directing people to Jesus.

In a Sept. 27 social media post, the 48-year-old actor and comedian shared a photo of himself and a friend performing a baptism while wearing only their underwear: “It might seem a bit soon to be baptizing people, but the Apostles did it on day one, so here we are,” he captioned the photo.

Though most comments on the photo were supportive, some took issue with his attire: “Moved by your faith, but bro maybe more modest,” wrote one commenter.

My biggest concern with Russel Brand actually doing water baptisms is this. Has he been ordained by a local church? Is he an ordained minister? In the NT examples of the Book of Acts, the only ones we see performing water baptisms on new believers are the apostles and the men ordained by a church.

I think it would’ve been better if he was wearing trunks but he said the photo shoot wasn’t planned.

We can all do baptisms in time of emergency. Yet normally it is a thing clergy do. We’re not sure if he is Catholic or otherwise at this point.

I remember being told that Russell Brand is now a Catholic. But, I am also not sure if he is or not.

Apart from being a 3rd rank celebrity, why is this madman being given any oxygen by 'Christian' groups anywhere?

God Bless All :)
Third rate is awfully generous. I think he was third rate 10-15 years ago.

Hello Michie. I am wary when celebrities say they are believers now, especially given that in the modern celebrity obsessed church culture people can listen to famous voices uncritically and then head for disappointment. Madonna, Sharon Stone, Charlie Sheen and Kanye West might be previous examples of people who claimed a conversion, were listened to by many in the church, were given a platform and then crashed and burned after spouting increasingly erratic nonsense. Celebrities get a platform in churches not because of their spiritual condition, but because they are celebrities and many of them are eventually recognised as wolves.

If Russel Brand is a genuine believer he should sit quietly in a church, be discipled and learn, not be given a platform to talk tat because of his celebrity. He's a nut.

God Bless You :)

Brother Kanye is working on a porn empire last I heard. ;)

But- I’m willing to believe anyone who claims to have come to Christ until their fruits show otherwise.

People love to cling to the past. Paul had to earn trust amongst the apostles as well but they did not cast him out from the get go.

Yes. Paul had to earn and learn. In Galatians 1:17 it says Paul first spent three years in Arabia in learning and reflection before going to meet with the Apostles. We can accept conversions without instantly propelling someone into a leadership position they aren't suited for. Kanye West was given an instant platform by many ministries to talk gibberish, because he was a celebrity. It seems as though Russel Brand is getting the same red carpet treatment.
God Bless :)

I do not see Brand being treated even close to the madness and hero worship Kanye was. I even read one person that said he was their pastor…I mean… that’s crazy town stuff right there.

Watch this space. It will get crazier ^_^

This is a 'comedian' who {allegedly} sexually assaulted a woman and then boasted about it live on radio 25 minutes later. Now he's a leader in the church doing baptisms in his under-pants ^_^

We really can't hold people's past sins against them. That's what the devil does.

From what little I know of this man, I believe he's eccentric. And being eccentric isn't unchristian. However a Christian should keep propriety and modesty in mind. If he had been wearing speedos and nothing else, it would still be inappropriate. He needs to demonstrate that he's sincere and takes this seriously. Baptism is a sacred sacrament after all.

If you look up images of river baptisms, you'll see plenty of people who are fully dressed in regular clothes. In one image the baptizer was wearing a suit.

So what about nude baptisms in the early church?
