He called them traitors to America then after he knew they were being targeted for what he accused them of, he kept doing it.If I was on a jury for a civil trial like this one or a similar one, I would find it difficult to blame the defendant for the actions of those who were sending death threats being criminally harassing towards the plaintiff.
I think a big part of this is that he continued to defame them for years and he was sanctioned specifically because he refused to cooperate with discovery.Those who were actually harassing the plaintiffs with death threats should have been the ones charged with a crime and put on trial in my opinion.
However, I do agree that Mr. Giuliani should have behaved in a much better way and responded in a much better legal way throughout that civil trial and after that trial.

For those who don't know, Judge Howell holds court in the Pettyman Federal Courthouse which is so close to the Capitol that the Inaugural stage can be seen from the front plaza.Judge Howell is fair but firm.
