  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

RPG Spotlighter

Well, good evening to you all. I've been looking for some good RPs to join, or else to make, but my search has not gone exactly well. Somehow, during all this, I got the idea to start spotlighting threads. Each week I intend to bring you a spotlight on two RPs a week: One older one, and one new one. Hopefully, this will get things a bit more exciting around here.
I'm still working out the details of how I want to do this, so give me a few whiles to hash out my ideas before I start my stop lights.
Keep on the look out, though. You may just find your thread spotlighted.

The basic Spotlights will be these two:
:RP Spotlight:

Our RP Spotlight will showcase one thread from the New Worlds or Christia groups. No threads in the Movies & Books group will be chosen, though there may be an additional spotlight for them in the weeks to come. The thread is chosen at random, and will give some information and background of the thread.

~Up & Coming~

Up & Coming highlights a recent thread added to CF's RPG section. Again, only threads in the New Worlds or Christia group will be chosen for this spotlight. A link to the OOC will be posted for anyone interested in joining.

It began with a snow dragon and a stolen stone of great mystery. Now, almost two years later, The Mystery of the Dragons is the longest New Worlds thread on CF. And it is still active.
"It's based off a story I began when I was sixteen," comments Ellesar, the creator of the thread. "Basically, it's about a girl who goes searching for the dragons she had heard about for years."
A simple premise, but the results have been concrete. The thread reached ten thousand posts earlier this month. When asked what makes the thread different from the others, Ellesar replied: "I don't really know. It doesn't have as many writers as some of the other RPGs.... There are only three players including myself."
While there are only a few players involved, their posting frequency keeps the thread moving fast, often covering several pages in a single day. But Ellesar thinks that's okay. "Everyone has a passion for writing, so it's been a lot of fun."
So, what does the future hold for The Mystery of the Dragons? "I'm not sure yet; I...collaborate with the other players, and they have also been beneficial with helping me come up with plot twists." This, she believes, is why the thread has been successful so far.

~Up & Coming~

Up and coming on our spotlight is another commonly visited idea: Atlantis. However, Everloving, founder of the thread Saving Atlantis, hopes hers will be a winner. "We've taken the concept of Atlantis and put a whole new spin on it," she begins, "We've removed magical powers and replaced it with technology. And, all the characters are human."
So, what is the story about? Another commonly visited idea: a megalomaniacal villain wanting to rule the world. "Mainly," Everloving explains, "There are two very different worlds that are about to collide in order to save humans." These two groups are the Atlantians, who obsess about health and longevity, and the surface dwelling humans. The story is still young, though, and as Everloving puts it, "The plot will develop more later."
If you are considering joining, though, don't expect a cakewalk. "We're accepting any players, but...only diligent RPers who can handle a thick plot should jump in." However, not to exclude anyone, she adds: "But we can handle some newbies if they're willing to work."
True enough, the thread seems to have several of the newer faces on CF, as well as a few older ones. Overall, the cast looks promising, which may help this thread achieve it goals. "Perhaps bring[ing] the Atlantians to the surface to seek help," the GM unfolds the story, " Then, they'll bring surface dwellers to help fight the villain and his army, since most Atlantians aren't willing to fight."
An overused setting and plot, possibly, but a promising story is a guarantee.

Cyberwing's Corridors is in the spotlight this week. It began with several freak accidents, and some less then spiritual people find themselves in a strange, unfamiliar world. "They wake up in the wilderness where the evil Trullocks (superhuman mutants) hunt them," Cyberwing explains, "They want to make it to the Gate and get out off this nightmare existence, their Corridor to freedom." Along the way, they with safe houses and hidden clues to help them escape with their lives.
Or is any of it even real? When asked about the premise of the thread, Cyberwing replied, "The experience of the comatose victim has always fascinated me," and also described it as "a spiritual battle being fought in the world of the coma victim." Ultimately, though, "
This thread is about facing issues of spiritual warfare and faith that confront us in our everyday lives but using fantasy and allegory. In this thread, evil and sin are more easily seen but just as difficult to contend with. Some will figure it out, some will not."
"It's creative," Paladin Dave, a player in the thread , states, "But I have a hard time seeing much direction in it.
It progresses as quickly as Cyberwing allows, unless we enter a conversation or fight and people stop posting. I'm guilty of tying it up like that, by the way."
That's understandable. After all, no thread is perfect, and that is fine with Cyberwing.
"As an author," she says, "I have found it most rewarding to write with and encourage new writers to explore the creativity Father placed within them. Working with other talented writers of all ages and from all walks of life [is what I have enjoyed most]!"
And the future? Cyberwing's not telling, which means you will just have to read it yourself.

~Up & Coming~

Mutants are running amok in the world of the future, and TrueImpossibility's Mutant FBI needs help to stop them, mutant help. "
I guess [it's] a unique twist or really a combination of two ideas," TrueImpossibilty remarks, "The mutant theme is pretty common but the characters are usually against any police instead of working with them. There doesn’t seem to be much FBI themed games, but it seems to be a popular television theme so I hope it will stir interest too."
The basic plot details a branch of the FBI trained to fight and contain renegade mutants. This branch is made of mutants who have chosen to uphold the law rather than break it. They are brought to hone their special powers to better apprehend the criminals.
"Anyone is welcome to join," TrueImpossibility invites, with one stipulation, "No one who likes to be the star though; I want to keep all the characters equal with each other and have their limitations."
As the thread grows and progresses, TrueImpossibility would like to see it really grow. "If it plays out how I am expecting it too, the game will be multiple threads. As I see the players progressing with their characters and the storyline, I will assigned certain characters to go on missions (which will be separate threads) where they will act as a team of FBI agents set to capture a criminal."
We look forward to seeing what might happen, but for now there remains only one question: will you join the fight to uphold the law? If you would, here is the place to register.

(disclaimer: due to several site malfunctions, I was not able to do a spotlight last week. This may occasionally happen.)

:RP Spotlight:

A Christia thread is the spotlight for this week; none other than StarSplitter's A Grain of Sand. The story centers around a small group's quest to find the fabled elven fountain of youth. They seek the fountain so they may destroy it. However, the task proves to be rather difficult, since the fountain of youth is actually a timelord named Alba Eth. "To give away more would be to spoil my surprises ahead," Star says as she finishes her description.
But what has made the thread, now nearing its third thread-break, so successful. Star says its about the freedom she gives her fellow writers. "It... has nearly seven or eight RPGers in it, [but] they are all part of making the plot work.
There is a central plot line which the thread follows, the finding of the Fountain of Youth, but everything else about it, details concerning the fountain and the journey there, are all developed by the RPGers and approved by me, the GM. It is not the story of one, but the devotion and hard work of the whole."
When asked about the concept of the thread, she gives this advise: "Like all of my threads, I do not think about it ahead of time," and later added, "When I start a thread, I go with a single momentary idea (such as a woman who has an amulet of great power or two cities pitted in war or the search for meaning in a pair jeweled keys) and run with it until better and greater ideas of how to continue it come up and that's how the thread progresses."
She also cautions about her strictest rule: "I am also very strict about living real life first before posting on CF. I do not allow my RPGers to worry over posting because people are waiting on them even though they've got a million things on their plates in real life."
And the thread's future? Star won't tell, but she did say this: "I enjoy how not even I know sometimes where things are going. ... It's good to be the GM."

~Up and Coming~

Stone of Eternity is the spotlight for the Up and Coming section this week. This thread, headed by Navyguy7, formerly WPZanar07, is a classic good verses immensely powerful evil reborn to claim the world as his own. Navyguy explains: "The villain
has to regain four items of power in order to complete a ritual that will give him both unlimited power and invulnerability to everything. He is already immortal, unable to die of age, due to bonding his life to the Stone of Eternity." Thus, the aim of the thread will be about stopping this from happening. "But," he adds, "It's hard to say how your own thread will go before it gets going."
Navyguy is looking for "players with enough imagination to move the story along themselves, even introducing some side-stories into the mix, such as a character's shady past coming back to haunt him/her."
The premise of the story comes from a previous villain Navyguy wrote for a different story. This story focuses around the villain as the central character, even though he is the antagonist.
So, what is the Stone of Eternity? You will have to join this exciting story to find out.

Talking animals has always been an attraction to man, but never has the idea been performed quite the way it has in Animal Wars, a sci-fi comedy RP by SampsonX. Although the initial thread has been completed, a sequel has already begun.
"
There's actually a story...[behind]...this," Sampson explains, "Around fourth grade I was playing with a friend, and we found a stick and a play stick-horse. I turned the horse around and we started to fight like the sticks were swords. Soon, we had a whole story."
The story is not quite the original that Sampson imagined. The original began with the purpose of a small infiltration unit eliminating the leaders of the animal army. However, along the way, a megalomaniacal robot with his android army interrupts the war. The two sides are forced to cooperate and eventually eliminate the robot leader.
"The second RPG is set six months after the events of the first RPG," Sampson says. "In this RPG, the rogue agent Maverik is trying to lead the same band of humans and animals, plus a few new additions, on a quest to destroy his old, but now twisted agency, QUAK."
But what makes the thread great? "Animal Wars is different because of it's intensity, brevity, and quirks....The characters, the plot, and even the design of the RPG were one of a kind...[but] I can't say enough about the players....Everyone contributes, and that's what makes this thread so amazing to work on. Everyone holds up their ends of the reign, and everyone is so willing to try new things."
At some points, it seemed that the thread was all but dead, but through the stubbornness of its players (or perhaps their randomness), the thread has blossomed into a grand story. But the future could be uncertain. " Even I, the GM," Sampson remarks, "Never know where it's going to go. I'm not even sure if the good guys will win in the end." One thing, however is certain; "Due to popular demand, The Prodigal [the sequel] will feature an increase in the number of explosions."

~Up & Coming~

BlueIceDragon and Kitangel have recently started an RP called Styrmwraith Tales which takes place in the land of winged creatures. While they wouldn't reveal their plans, the premise of the thread starts with a well trained guard group suddenly vanishing. BlueIceDragon explains, "[It is a story of]...conflict, [and] betrayal, amid a rich fantasy world with unique races and magical abilities....The intention was to develop a rich framework utilizing ideas from many sources."
While the concept of the thread is fascinating, it is not a thread for anyone. BlueIceDragon describes the type of people who would enjoy this thread as "players whoare going to develop their characters, who are serious about their characters and their role in the story, those who are willing to work with other players (especially obviously younger players) in order to develop and advance the story, [and] those who love the medieval fantasy genre."
The story shows much promise, as the story will evolve with the player's goals. "Obviously, we are also bringing our own originality and creativity into the story and encourage other players to do the same," and later, he adds, "We haven't revealed all the plot details for the thread and have a number of twists, complications and even characters that, in combination with the unique additions of the players, will make for a good, developing thread."
Styrmwraith Tales has a great basis with plenty of potential, and if you find it to your liking, you'll have to read up on your own.
