When I started this thread, I hadn't had a chance to play yet. I played a lot over the weekend, and I really like the game. It's a little buggy, but nothing major. The graphics are great, but you have to have a great PC (I do). There are some new concepts that I really like, such as the treaties and ambushes.

You can't really go wrong with either Rome or Medieval. If your Computer has the power, I'd go with Rome. The only thing is, the mouse button interface is different for each game, and that will mess you up for one game if you've learned the other.

That's weird. I did the same thing, and it worked fine with winrar. You might want to download from the official rome site.

It is rather fun to take 1,000 Cappadocian Calvary and do a full charge against 2,000+ infantry ala-Fields of Pelanor. Nothing like the sight of the enemy fleeing for their lives as your calvary efortlessly cuts them down.

What is even funner, is when you manage to kill the general within the first few minutes of the battle from the aforementioned charge.

I have played every Total War game so far, and Rome is by far the best. They changed a few things and I believe all of them were for the better.

The Campaign map is different, armies all have a movement ranking, where they "walk" across the campaign map. Where your armies are when engagin makes a difference too, you can attack an enemy from two sides and on the battle map your forces will start out on either side of the enemy.

The battle maps feel different too. It might just be me, but I feel like I have more control over my armies, I also prefer the new clicking interface, it feels more natural to me. The incredible graphics make the battles more tactile and real. You can march, run, or charge your armies... charging cavalry into the rear of engaged enemy troops is simply devestating, and you can SEE the effects. It is very nice.

In all this game has sucked up hours and hours of my time. You can unlock new factions to play for the campaign. There are also lots of special units that you can hire as mercenaries. Elephants for example, and they are a blast.

I highly, highly recommend this game to any RTS or even turn based fan, as you can pause the battle to issue orders if you want, so it need not be a click-fest.

How do you unlock factions? Be exact, since I have read various things on the totalwar.com website, but they haven't worked for me.

Go to this link and download the .txt file. There are directions available on how to install mod and it does work. All factions, including the non-playable ones, are available. I would recommend probably renaming the file you are going to replace with descr_strat.txt.bck.

Enjoy.

Thanks, I'll try it. I read on the totalwar.com forums that that would work, but;

A. I had no descr_strat.txt file, and
B. I put one in, but it still didn't work.

I can't take screenshots, either, so who knows. It's still a great game.

That is odd. I had it the perspective folder when I tried it out. Perhaps it is created when you start playing a campaign.
