"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,who have been called according to his purpose" (NIV)
I just quoted from the NIV because I quickly copy and pasted from the internet, I am not saying I am for or against it, not that it matters in regards to my question.
Now I've always believed that this verse supports my belief in the sovereignty of God within the life of believers. Everytime I went though extreme inner suffering, even though cursing God and fearing a loss of sanity, deep down I always believed that His hand was allowing it and it was for my own good. He is my Father and sometimes (most of the time) tough love is the best love. I always believed that since His hand had allowed it, He knew I would get through it with His help and would be better off.
Now my problem is this; How does this verse apply to true believers who commit suicide? What about christians who end up in insane asylums, such as some of those during the revival at whales in the early 1900s? True God does not directly influence free will, but doesn't He help us with His Holy Spirit in combination with our enviroments? I used to believe that He worked through imperfection, and no matter how far some one would stray that His grace would always lead the person back. Now I'm not so sure.
