I have no idea, but my guess (just a guess LOL) is that it's just fashion and has no meaning. Maybe the ring itself could have meaning (passed down from generations) and they just choose to wear them on their middle finger or something. I think it's totally random. Usually it means someone gave her a ring (that's not an engagement ring) or she bought a ring that only fits on that finger, or that fits the best on that finger. If you want to know if it was a gift from a significant other, you could always compliment her on it. If you say "That's a pretty ring" she'll most likely answer with "thanks my ____ gave it to me, or "Thanks I got it at ______". And if not, just ask her where she got it.
There are way too many ring meanings in the first place. Engagement ring, wedding ring, friendship ring, commitment ring, promise ring, vegetarian ring...who would know what means what?
