Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

What is righteousness?

Rightoeusness is an absolute perfect keeping of all the commands of God along with a perfect trust in Him. It isn't just a keeping of the Law but to always do that which pleases God in thought, word, deed and motive. It is to be perfectly pure in all things.

Righteousness knows nothing of degrees. You can't be almost righteous any more than you can be almost holy. You are either righteous or you aren't. There is no in between. Your best can never be good enough.

So if these things are true why do many seek a sanctifying righteousness by the Law? The Law is unbenbding and demands perfection. It can accept nothing less than perfection. That is what the whole Sermon on the Mount is about.

Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Paul isn't talking just about justifying righteousness in this passage. He, by the Spirit, is telling us that our only righteousness of any kind is Christ. We do not gain justifying righteousness by faith and then go on to perfection by the Law. Gal. 3:3.

Christ is all our righteousness period.

Any discussion?

Galatians 2 is about self righteous religious works mongers. It does not say we should not seek righteousness but to seek it by faith in Christ and not as a means of justification. Paul continues the revelation in chapter 3 and clearly tells us these 'believers' started in faith but tried to earn their justification. Its not about sanctification or holiness but about folks trying to earn their way into heaven.

My point wasn't that we shouldn't seek righteousness. All believers want to be righteous in this world. My point was that Paul obviously, in all his writings, makes it clear that righteousness doesn't come by the law. Does the law give you a sanctifying righteousness?

But the book of Galatians is about more than just earning your way to Heaven. Paul is talking to believers about the life of faith and our relationship with the law. He is concerned with more than setting them straight on jusitfication.

Agreed.

Does the law give you a sanctifying righteousness?

You know my answer. I have posted many times that we are never, ever saved or made holy by Law keeping. The Law shows us our sin and drives us to Christ for our justification as well as our sanctification which are two sides of the same doctrinal coin.

What is righteousness?

Righteousness is a relational phrase and to grasp it properly we must recall that as a Jew Paul would be understanding it in its Hebrew sense which means being faithful to the covenant. The following comes from the New Dictionary of Theology edited by David F. Wright, Sinclair B. Ferguson, and J.I. Packer published by IVP.
