Hebrews 5:14 (NLT)
Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
Hebrews 5:14 (NASB)
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
As we read in scripture this learning of right and wrong, good or evil, is a thing that needs to be practiced and learned. If we do not learn it as the thing that needs to be learned, we don’t know, or can not tell, right from wrong according to scripture. For according to scripture, distinguishing between the two does not come naturally, our minds and intellect can not distinguish between the definition of good and evil, right and wrong.
It does, as we are told in scripture, take training and practice to have our senses trained to discern good and evil. This is the seeing or understanding of right and wrong from God’s eye sight, by His definition. Which is seeing right and wrong from their eternal ground, that which good and evil are in themselves.
So this training we have been offered, if we are willing, is to be a learning and growing with a clearer and clearer understanding of right and wrong.
As with all God’s training that would become life in the believer, it takes a commitment and a willingness to be taught. For as with all training, to be a good student and learn that which is being taught, it takes the acknowledgement that one does not know the thing which they are being taught. Therefore it takes an acknowledgment that we don’t know, we don’t see, we don’t understand, that which is right from wrong, good or evil. To see and acknowledge that we need this training, that we might learn to distinguish between right and wrong is the first step toward this learning.
This humility of heart, is necessary, if this training would be learned in the heart. For it has to be entered into voluntarily for God will not force this training on us.
To enter into this school of Christ is a choice. This is where one’s personal, one and one relationship with Christ grows, for to the degree of learning will be the degree of growth. There is no substitute for this relationship, for this is the cause of Christ being seen in a believer, it is their witness to all that would have eyes to see. For God has promised in scripture, those that are of God, will hear His voice. This hearing of His voice is the instruction of right and wrong.
As with all growth it comes only through God Himself. For the hand of God to each individual believer is different but the goal is the same. That the believer would be able to distinguish between right and wrong. For right and wrong are that which God can bless and that which He can not bless.
For God who is far more willing to bless than we can possibly imagine has but one requirement. You must do that which is right to get blessed. For righteousness He can bless, unrighteousness He can not. For having our senses trained to discern right and wrong is a hallmark of our walks with God. For until we have our senses trained to discern right from wrong we will be doing what is right in our own eyes. Or as scripture calls it a establishing a righteousness of one’s own.
For God is the ever teaching one, let us be the ever learning one’s.
Blessings
