  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Actually the errors in Rick Warren's book are and have been well known in reformed circles. The seeker sensitive easy believism is hardly considered biblical.
Richard Bennett is sound, has a great ministry and his testimony is available free from www.mountzion.org and is called, From Tradition to Truth, A Priest's Story. It is a very moving testimony to God's grace in a life! His site, BereanBeacon is well named as we are instructed to validate all we hear or read by scripture. We see no such entertainment or seeker sensitive, purpose driven, felt needs issues there but that all must be reborn from above, repent(a gift from God), place faith in Christ alone(a gift from God) and live a God honoring life. Those who remain in a sinful lifestyle and/or bear no fruit reflect the one they serve, obviously not God!

I agree, and read this morning that the book has sold a VERY large amount in hardbound, and the paperback run was increased from 500 to 600 thousand. Tickling the ears sells. :(

Thank you Hagios17 for the links to the articles, I will keep them for future reference and for those who are all-a-twitter over the author and book. :(:(

Well, I've seen worse books do well, imo.

It's not a great book, but considering the huge lack of mature christians in the church, I think this book has actually been helpful.

I went through the book in a small group and at our church very relunctantly. Personally, the book had nothing in it that I felt I didn't know, and a few things that I didn't agree with---but after hearing first hand about some of the positive, real and amazing stories that happened in different groups because of this book, I can no longer condemn it. God did use this book to reach people in some really personal ways in our church. Even if I didn't get much out of it, I can't complain about it either.

I agree with Imblessed that God can and probably will use Rick Warren's book as a blessing. I think God can use anything to advance his kingdom (which probably doesn't shock anyone, since we all believe in the sovereignty of God). I'm sure that God will even use The DaVinci Code to stir up interest in Christ and his Gospel.

Even though this book may very well bring people to Christ, let us not be quick to give it our approval. I recently learned (and posted in the Baptist forum) that Rick Warren actually believes in salvation for unbelievers! He believes that unreached people can be somehow saved apart from faith in Christ. Furthermore, Pastor Warren has been consulting with Jews, and helping them to attract more people to their synagogue services. Somehow, I doubt that the Lord wants people who practice false religions to get better at their practice of false religion.

I don't suggest burning copies of the book, or bringing Pastor Warren to a Grand Inquisition. I don't even suggest that people abstain from reading the book. But please keep in mind that the person who wrote it believes that some who reject our Lord Jesus Christ can be saved.

I agree with all that you've said, but I've some unresolved belief issues in that same area. Maybe you could help me, on this thread, with understanding how it is a person who has never heard of Jesus Christ, has rejected Him?
I'm not trying to contend, I'm just curious.

Oh, & thanks Mrs. McWilliams for the word up on Richard Bennet. I never got deep into the critiques, the whole thing struck me as show biz to begin with, but I'll check out that site. I'm always interested in visitin' with people who are on to the scam.

I'd love to have a discussion on the doctrine of exclusive salvation through Christ. May I ask what your views and understanding on this issue are?

The PDL is mostly fluff. Warren could have written the book in far fewer pages. He stretched it out to be a 40 day devotional.

Guess it amazes me how so many will read such lite fare when there is real gold available! People still want to be spoon fed with so much easy believism seeker sensitive approach and dont seem concerned whether its real truth or just simulated, make believe!

Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the Word of God, in favour of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea

An excellent book to read that will help with discernment of what is being peddled in churches today is:
"
Todays Gospel, Authentic or Synthetic
" by Walter Chantry

Rick Warren preaches a Gospel concise with a focus on man covered in deceit as if to be a focus on God. And the Jesus he preaches isn't one who saves according to unmerited favour, but merited favour.

I reject his work-based principles (Pagan: --Arminianism, Pelagianism, Humanism, Psychology, etc), making grace no more grace by argument of the divine and holy Scriptures:) And shall reside in the truth only if the Lord so wills. And contending for the faith, as I am not ashamed of the Gospel (as conveyed in the Scriptures), which is the power unto salvation.

I was as a sponge to what the Temple and it’s proponents taught, but now am objective to the many popular and fallacious views they hold, as of the result of a change in mind brought about by God. And for this reason I know I will be looked upon as one who is foolish and weak, but I know that: "God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;"

I agree with Imblessed that God can and probably will use Rick Warren's book as a blessing.

I think that if He does so it will be in exposing it for the tripe it is.

I live relatively close to Saddleback (my friend I courted a while back had a friend who went there), and I can tell you this: it has done much much more harm than good.

I'm curious if you have any examples?
I'm not setting you up or anything! I'm myself no real fan of Rick Warren even though my church seems to love his stuff right now.....I think his stuff is very shallow, although to so many christians in the USA right now, it's very "deep"(that's what's so scary about it)

As I mentioned, I didn't get much out of it, but it did seem to have a lot of positve affect on people at our church, although I think it may have been more the small groups that were participated in more than the book itself.......

Really pitiful how millions follow the pied piper to eternal damnation in order to have their ego fed in this world! They never seem to notice that this world is preparation for the next and eternal one!

Here's an example of why I don't like Rick Warren and his seeker sensitive church climate. This is from his website last spring (my pastor shared it with me) - when Saddleback was celebrating their 25th anniversary.
Dear Saddleback Family,

This Sunday's service at Angel Stadium may be the greatest party any of us
ever attend!

It will certainly make history - not just for our Saddleback Church family,
but for the future of the church around the world.

Only one other time since 1980 has our church been able to gather in a single
service. Imagine what it will be like to see our entire church family in one
place!

10 WAYS TO ENJOY THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU! We have 2,000 tickets left (out of 45,000) so if you
need a few more tickets for friends or family come to the ticket table at the
stadium entrance. We will make room for you!

CARPOOL with your small group!

ARRIVE EARLY! Concessions will be open and thousands of small group tailgate
parties will be fun. We have bands playing at the three entrances from
11:15-12:15, Jana Alayra for our children at the Main Gate, a jazz band is at
Gate 1 and Saddleback Praise at Gate 3. We even have the Riders4Christ doing
freestyle motorcycle jumps in the parking lot!

BRING SUNSREEN, HATS, and BOTTLED WATER (No other drinks) Some 25th
anniversary hats, shirts and sweatshirts will be for sale at the stadium.

GET BAPTIZED AT ANGEL STADIUM!
WHEN? Right after the service.
WHERE? Outside Gates 1 or 4.
WHAT DO I WEAR? Modest clothing, or we will provide you shorts, shirts and
towels.
WHERE WILL I CHANGE CLOTHES? In changing tents right by the baptism pools.
WILL THE WATER BE HEATED? Of course!

PLAN A TAILGATE PARTY WITH YOUR SMALL GROUP! You can keep it simple with fast
food or plan a gourmet spread. (invite me to that one!)

ENJOY THE FUN STUFF. From 11:30 to 12:30 inside the stadium we'll show a best
of Saddleback video 3 times, with Pastor Doug on location around the stadium
in between each showing. From 12:30 to 1:00 we'll be preparing for the worship
service with interviews from the stands (you may see yourself on the stadium
screens!), Saddleback videos and special musical guests. There's even a rumor
there may be a Rick Warren "talking mouth" like on Conan O' Brian!

IF YOU HAVE EXTRA TICKETS - please, please return them to LOST TICKET table at
each entrance so others can have a seat! (If you've lost your ticket, go to
this table also.)

PRAY that this event will begin a movement to change the world!

I CAN'T WAIT TO BE THERE WITH YOU!

Pastor Rick
