MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry hit President Obama for ending the Iraq war and pulling out U.S. troops -- carrying out a Status of Forces Agreement first negotiated between the Bush administration and the Iraqi government.

"I would send troops back into Iraq," he said. "I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there. The idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country, with all of the treasure, both in blood and money, that we have spent in Iraq -- because this president wants to kowtow to his liberal leftist base, and move out those men and women. He could have renegotiated that time frame. I think it is a huge error for us."

Maybe Saddam's ghost still has WMDs hidden there! Oh, I forgot that excuse for the invasion/occupation was thrown out a long time ago and replaced with some vague notion of nation building and "democracy".

I can understand that Republicans want to attack every decision Obama makes and I could see them saying "he is pulling out too early" just to get a jab in but to actually say we need to send troops back is just beyond belief. Good way to make sure you are never elected. It's always easy for politicians to send other peoples kids off to do jobs they wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

That's right. Those chemical munitions used in roadside bombs weren't there.

Rick Perry missed them memo that one should bone up on the issues before deciding to run for president. A person with nothing to say should do himself a favor and say nothing.

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Seriously, this is just plain dumb, what he said.

A single old artillery shell was reason enough to invade Iraq and kill thousands of people? I'm sure it's existence totally threatened the safety of us back in the US. Good thing Bush saved us from it. What a horrible threat diverted. Oh wait, that was the only confirmed chemical weapon and we didn't even find it ourselves. Some little aging dud artillery shell whose use didn't cause a single causality is a rather sad excuse for a war.

Didn't they catch some courier there, too?

Since 2003, US forces have destroyed 500 chemical weapons

Are you speaking of the stock piles of mustard gas the US found as part of their search for weapons of mass destruction back during the starting of the war. As far as I remember no mustard gas was ever used as part of roadside bombs that were deployed by the various insurgency groups. If I am wrong, please send a credible article citing in tenses were mustard gas was used against the American Occupation forces in the war against Iraq.

Returning to the original intent of the OP, I get the impression that the neo-con/ultra-nationalist have no desire that we should ever remove any of our military bases form the middle east. Part of their objective was to build a permanent base in Iraq and a central platform to launch further military operations throughout the middle-east. There was never any intent to "get-out" of Iraq.

The military bases in Iraq were supposed to serve as the primary staging ground to support the invasion of Iran. Without the military bases in Iraq there is probably frustration in formulating a new strategy to Invade Iran in the coming year(s).

What "chemical munitions" used in roadside bombs?

Most of the IEDs from the earlier years of the war were made with artillery shells lying across the landscape left over from the Iran-Iraq war back in the '80s. A few of those shells happened to be gas shells, and the insurgents used them without knowing what they were. It is no secret that chemical weapons were used in the Iran-Iraq war.

Not mustard gas, but sarin and its binary precursors.
