Are there any books or at least very comprehensive videos/blog posts on this topic? I honestly hate being called on to public prayer, because I find that I struggle to make the prayer engaging, comprehensive, and succinct. I find that at best I ramble a word salad and end awkwardly.

I'm really bad at it. I recorded myself and listened to it, and it's just as terse and awkward as I suspected in my head. I've found that most advice on this topic is basically "Just open your heart and let the words flow!". Exactly what I've tried, and it's not good.

Just as there is a basic structure that can allow most people to make at least fairly good plots, or music, I think leading public prayers is no different. But I need some type of formula for this, so I have something to practice. Is anyone aware of such a resource? A chapter from a larger book on sermon delivery or something would be perfectly fine. I don't mind buying a book with a lot of unrelated information. I would just really like to improve on this front.

Not sure if this will be useful, but here is some instruction from John Piper's ministry, "Desiring God".

How to Pray Aloud in a Group

There's a book I just picked up by Dr. D A Carson called Praying With Paul that looks like it might prove at least indirectly useful to you (though I have only skimmed it). Carson is also the editor and one of the authors of a comprehensive guide to prayer called Teach Us To Pray. (which is also available at Amazon or as part of Logos Bible software if you happen to use it).

You might find Dr. J I Packer's book useful as well, as it addresses praying corporately directly. It's called

Prayer is not a performance. We don't pray to impress others, we pray to communicate with God. The focus of the prayer must be on HIM, not yourself, and not even the others in the group. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, as He is the best resource.

Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6. That is the basis for prayer. It starts with worship, devotion and submission, and is followed by requests, confession and dedication. Everything you need is in the Bible.
