  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've got to pick a topic for a research paper in English class. It's a very broad assignment: just pick anything you want to research. I was thinking about using the Fatima apparition for my topic, but my library really has no information regarding the subject. So now I need another topic. Any suggestions of some good Catholic topics I could research that I would be able to find a lot of information on?

Why don't you do it on the many works George W has done to unite the democrat and republican parties? College English professors tend to be obnoxiously right winged ;) :D

I think you got that backwards. College professors are notoriously left-wing LIBERALS...

How long does the paper have to be?

5-7 pages.

That's a strangely broad assignment. Is it supposed to be a critique? Compare/Contrast? Persuasive? Narrative? I'm at a loss... I would need more guidance than that.

Basically, I'm told that we have to research a topic, write a lot about it, and then write a little bit about our feeling or opinion.

Yea, I know what you mean, these topics are extremely broad.

Five to seven pages is pretty short, your topic will need to be fairly narrow in order to even make a dent in 5-7 pages. If it weren't so broad a topic, I would suggest abortion- it would be a nice chance to present the facts to your professor in a forum where he has to listen in order to grade the paper. This kind of mentality is why all my professors loved me so much.;)

Oooh- what about contraception? He will really love you then.....

Here are some other options (just in case you didn't like the two in my previous post):

Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II)
Theology of the Body
a favorite saint
Instead of doing one on abortion, you could do one on the evils of the abortion industry.
Mary as Co-Redemptrix or Mediatrix
History of Monasticism
Stigmata
Bi-location
Theophanies
