• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
 • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Trilby3-25-05d.jpg

When Trilby arrived at HUA the pads of her feet were so fragile that they bleed as soon as she walked on the floor. The few teeth she has left were so rotten that one actually fell out on the floor. Her coat was a matted mess. The tiny sweetheart has suffered greatly in her life at a puppymill in Missouri. She was kept in a small cage and bred over and over again. She was denied basic medical care, kept in a cage where she was forced to walk on wire, never groomed and bred time after time. She spent 7 years in that hell. Trilby deserves to be adored and treated like a princess for the rest of her life. Trilby is a Yorkshire Terrier. She was born in 1996 and weighs about 7 pounds. She has been spayed and is current on health care

Benny is a small Poodle. He's a smart fellow who has most likely been abused. He is wary of people. When he learns to trust a person then he is very loving to them. These photos were taken when he first came in. He's very darling now with the hair cut back from his eyes. He was born in 1999 and weighs 13 pounds. He has been neutered and is current on health care.

Benny needs a person with a huge heart for animals to adopt him and help him learn that he can trust again. He needs a person who really understands and loves dogs.

Donna Donna is so happy to have a Buddy! Her Buddy, Donna Warnat from New York, sent her this message: "Dear Donna: I am glad you are safe at HUA. I know you're a very special girl. I'm very fortunate. I have three wonderful min pins here with me. One was born in 1994 in a puppy mill in Missouri. She's so sweet and looks like you. I know the lucky 'special someone' who gives you a 'forever home' will count you as a special blessing each and every day." Donna sends happy kisses.

Donna was born in 1994 but she looks and acts much younger. She is a Min Pin who weighs 19 pounds. She is a very sensitive girl who wants to be loved. She loves to go outdoors and explore. Donna was rescued from a puppymill in Missouri.

Lucky

Lucky was lucky that he had a family. He lived in a home and was loved and he learned many great things about living in a home and car rides. But it turned out not to be so lucky after all. His family gave him away to a person who kept him chained in the yard in all seasons. The police issued many citations for the abuse of Lucky. Finally, Lucky escaped, which might have been lucky but he was hit by a car. He suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured jaw and broken ribs. Then he was taken to a shelter where he would have been killed. Then he was lucky. An HUA volunteer heard about Lucky and drove to the shelter to rescue him. Lucky is a terrific dog. Just one look at his face shows the depth of his devotion to humans. It's hard to conceive that a dog who has been so abused has the capacity to love so deeply. He is a male cocker/pekingese mix who was born in about 2000. He weighs about 20 pounds. He loves everyone and would make the greatest family member.

Griffina.jpg

Griffin was found abandoned in the country. He was very worried about what was going to happen to him. We can't imagine how anyone would dump such a precious boy. He's very happy, sweet, outgoing. He loves people and gets along well with other dogs. And how could you not love that face!?

Griffin is a beagle who was born in 2001 and weighs 19 pounds. He has been neutered and is current on health care.

Justin Justin's story should make us all sit up and learn an important lesson. Justin and his brother were Arlene's family after her four children moved away. When she died unexpectedly, none of the four children would take the dogs. They were dumped at the pound in New Jersey to die. A friend of the family heard about the dogs and went and got them out and told the family he would keep them until after the funeral and they could decide who would take them then.

The funeral came and went and none of Arlene's children would be responsible for these two dogs that their mother adored. The family that took them in could not keep them so they found them a home with a family in the neighborhoor. That family decided they could only keep one. So back Justin came - uprooted once again. The family had two vacations planned and Justin ended up at the vets - alone and afraid without his brother or anyone who loved him. His weight went from 21 pounds to 14 pounds. The family then called Fox Terrier Rescue who asked if we could help. Justin went to foster care in Pennsylvania and was adopted. He is very happy that he once again has a home with a person who loves and adores him. He should not have suffered such emotional trauma.

If you love your dog, please make arrangements for what will happen to him if you die. Justin wishes Arlene had done just that.

Tia Maria
Tia bounded for the car as it pulled into the driveway. He was coming home from work. She knew he did not like her very much, but she kept hoping to win him over. When she jumped up to give him a loving greeting, she did not see the baseball bat he was holding behind his back. She felt a horrible pain in her head before she lost consciousness. This story was told to us by the new renters who moved into the old farm house. They found the terribly injured dog left behind when the prior tenants moved away. A repair man told them the story. The man who had beaten Tia has bragged about it.

As horrible as that story was, it was nothing compared to the sight of Tia. One side of her face was crushed. Her teeth were destroyed, half of her nose obliterated, her eye smashed, her moth was out of line, and enough flesh was destroyed that her gums were exposed and cracked. She came to greet me when I arrived to take her to the Shelter. She politely gave me the sweetest welcome. When I invited her into the van, she climbed right in and gave me a grateful kiss as though she knew I had come to help her. All the way back I listened to her whistling breathing through her damaged nose.

Tia was taken to the University Hospital in Ames, Iowa for evaluation and surgery. It was a 400 miles drive but they offered her the best hope. Repair of her mouth was essential since she had exposed roots and gums. It was discovered that Tia had several mammary tumors. She had been also shot with a BB gun and had pellets throughout her body.

Tia has had two surgeries to restore her fact to the extent that she can live comfortably. She no longer whistles when she breathes, and she can chew small kibble food. Three surgeries have been required along with a spay to insure confirmation of Tia's mammary tumors which showed signs of malignancy. She is blind in the right eye and nothing could be done to restore her sight.

Through it all her spirits have never wavered. She has cheerfully ridden back to the hospital and loved her doctors and nurses as she loves all people. During her overnight stays in hotels, she has acted like the guest of honor, and she truly is the star attraction everywhere she goes. She showers love and attention on everyone, and she breaks everyone's heart.

Tia recovered from the surgeries and lived with us at HUA for three years before she died from mammary cancer. In her memory we created a program called Tia's Place. We take dogs and cats from people who are suffering from domestic abuse and keep them while the people go to shelters. Often pets are not allowed in shelters and people being abused will stay in the abusive conditions rather than leave their pets. We will keep their pets while they get their lives back on track and then they can get their pets back from us. Tia knew what it meant to be abused by a member of her family.
