Anything that could be called Christian thinking goes out the window when you hear people support rape like that. Pure rage takes over and trying to pacify it seems like an injustice itself. Forgiving those who have done me wrong is easier than forgiving those who do wrong to others. Condoning this behavior publicly is what can lead others to think it is acceptable and the cause of future victims. I've already heard Republican supporters parrot this talk to me in conversation so it is a serious issue that needs to be addressed with outright condemnation. The kind of condemnation we should have towards rape itself.

No one supports rape.

The drone attacks are one reason I can't support Obama either. The only vote that makes sense for me is 3rd party. So I have to think about either writing in Jill Stein or voting for Gary Johnson.

I hear you. I did that for Ross Perot back in 1992. Instead of voting 3rd party, I'm going with Mitt, and signing every internet petition I can find to help 3rd party candidates compete in future elections.

Many people believe that life in the womb involves actual human babies. As far as I know, for the 0.01 % of abortions that result from rapes, neither Mitt Romney nor Paul Ryan believe that the state should make abortion illegal. Not being totally heartless, they understand the trauma of legally expecting a girl needs to bear her rapists child.

Still, the baby in the womb is a innocent human baby. That is true for any baby contemplated to be fit to be abortion, including the 99.9 % of the cases that are not the result of rape.

Most Americans have always understood that in the matter of abortion, it is babies that are involved. Most are disturbed to hear that 50 million babies have been aborted since Roe vs Wade. Most are even disgusted by the idea that abortions born alive are being left alive to die by incinerators, and are not with Obama on thinking that this should be legal.

Still, abortion is not an issue in this presidential race.
And Phyllis Shafly, who was a real game changer in her day, is from before the Reagan era.

Maybe one year, people will look back on our civilization, after we have aborted ourselves, and recognize that we were monsters.
But, certainly, that year is not going to be 2012. People lament from either side, but it is not what they will be voting on this election cycle.

I appreciate your comments and for understanding the seriousness of all these comments about rape.

There's a lot of derailing going on in this thread---which is what people usually do when they want to avoid the thread topic.

I want people to understand that when these demeaning things are said about women and rape; it affects all of us who are rape survivors. It's like being victimized all over again---only with words from the good old boys in the Republican Party.

What I can't understand is why more people aren't outraged by these comments--whether they are Republican or Democrat.

My point for this thread is really not to argue the abortion issue; but to address the issue of the demeaning remarks Republicans have made about women and the issue of rape; and also Romney's disdain for the poor, elderly, disabled, veterans, etc.--all those who fall into the 47% who don't pay taxes.

I don't think it's correct to say these quotes indicate that Republicans support rape. To me, it's more like the quoted people trivialize rape.

In my opinion:

Comments claiming one can't be raped by one's husband, for instance, reduce a wife's sexuality to an asset, one that is given to her husband as part of the wedding contract.

Comments like the easy rape put the blame on the women, and basically suggest that some women bring on rape by their behavior.

Comments like legitimate, forcible or honest rape, seem to have two different implications. The first is that there is a large number of women crying rape that weren't raped, so we should doubt all reports of rape and require a woman to present overwhelming proof before claiming to be a victim. When coupled with the notion that the body shuts down when legitimately raped, it seems to be playing into the same notion as the 'relax and enjoy' comment...the notion that deep down inside, some women will enjoy being raped, their body not shutting down, and therefore the rape not being legitimate.

I see all of these as serious and somewhat misogynous misconceptions (wife belongs to husband, good girls don't wear tight clothes or hang out in bars, some women secretly enjoy rape) that trivialize the crime.

I also think that one can have a serious conversation about whether or not abortion is justified in the case of rape without having to trivialize it like this.
