Republic or Monarchy?

i reckon aussies living overseas should be exempt from compulsory voting. Do you know how tedious it is? they even need another australian citizen to sign the form for them, and then they have to be aware of when the elections are.. be they local or federal. Besides, some of them probably don't even watch aussie news, so how are they supposed to vote with the amount of infor they have?

now that's what i call madness..

Monarchy , they founded this country to what it is and I want to be loyal , we are a part of the commonwealth which does not mean we are England we are just alligned to it

I think that Australia is living in denial if we think we are anything but a republic already... I don't understand why they just don't make it official. We are more American then British...actually I think we are more American then some americans at times. j/k

I really think that Australia grew out from under the UK a long time ago.

Wow do you have a good understanding! I lived in America 20 years and you are right. We are more American than the Canadians. Shhh! Don't tell anyone.

I voted monarchy, but...I don't think it would make that much of difference to me. I'm kinda undecided.

It works how it is now, so why change it?

Just look at how messed up the USA is.... maybe the fact that they are a republic has something to do with that....

Actually Heidi, I both agree and disagree with your comment.

First, I don't think American republicanism is the best example as you said. We certainly have the advantage of learning from their mistakes.

Second, I don't believe it is working now in Australia as best as it could. We have the rudest parliament in the English-speaking world - contantly braying like idiot sheep, showing disrespect and inventing reasons to sow discontent among the public just for the sake of political point scoring. No wonder we have become a nation of whingers.

Our leaders of opposition (liberal or labour) constantly try to destroy the leadership in power, and in turn undermine the country. Does that mean a republic would solve the problem of rude political bullies stinking up our parliament and teaching our whole nation to be crude and rude? No, but I don't think we can say it is working well enough now. We do need some kind of changes.

Yeah, forget this democracy undermining the country, let's install a dictator so we can be unified and polite!

All republican thinkers through history (Plato, Machiavelli, Adam Smith, the Dutch republicans) have noted that by their nature republics don't last very long. I was very surprised a few months ago to see an ultra-patriotic American say that they were in their transfer from republican phase to the "security of the nation" phase.

Rudest Parliament in the Western world is an awesome title to have! Don't turn away God's blessing of seeing what our politicians are really like!

Hyperbole does not prove your point at all. In fact many other democracies operate quite well with a modicum of decorum and respect. Good manners do not destroy democracy, nor do they encourage a dictatorship. Your ad hominem and bigoted argument against our American cousins proved absolutely nothing too.

I would like to see new rules of conduct for parliamentary proceedure. We simply can't expect the rest of the country to operate with respect for freely elected democratic authority, when those at the top do not.

hmm, This is a tough topic, generally spilit about 50% either way. Its important to mention that there are very strong arguements to both the sides, and unless your aware of both point of views and their arguements I believe its too hard to make a decision.

I would just hate the flag to change as well , most people now dont care cause they never fought under that flag but when you fight under a flag their is a lot of significance to it. we should do whats the best for the country , not this whole "what has the flag or england got to do with my heritage" rubbish this is Australias heritage like it or not
