  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a Whites tree frog and a green tree frog. Used to have another green one and some hermit crabs thrown in there but they died. :(

Thats not actually my frog, but its the same species (whites) and looks a lot like mine, body shape, colour, size etc.

Thats a green's tree frog, only mine is a bit smaller and not as pretty, lol.

Theyre actually really low maintenance pets. You need to clean the tank only every so often (4 months or so) and thats quick to do, and theyre very forgiving if you don't feed them for a bit, heehee.

I've left them alone for two weeks without crickets, mind you I fed them a lot of extra ones before that.

If you wanna get your daughter one theyre pretty cheap. Greens tree frogs are only about 10 bucks Canadian :)

Thanks for adding pics of the frogs. I think frogs are so cute.
I will definately think about getting her a frog as long as they are low maintainance. I will do a little more research on the frogs though.

Here is a link to my daughters website for her departed Iggy, if you are interested in looking.

God Bless

I have had many frogs and salamanders in the past. Mostly Leopard Frogs and Tiger Salamanders. They make very cool pets but the only draw back is that they can't show affection and they certainly don't get attached to you. They can learn however, that when you open their cage you are probably going to feed them. I don't have any now, but at one time I had 22 frogs, 2 alligator lizards with 40+ eggs, and an anole. As you can see, I like them.

I kept mine right with my frogs and it did fine. I would imagine the temperature that you keep your frogs at would be just right as long as you don't have some weird frog that requires some weird temperature. :) They like to hide, so maybe you could get something for it to hide in or under. Just a suggestion. It probably isn't necessary and since they hide, you might not see it as often as you like.

You know, I decided I had better check up on my suggestions, so I got out one of my books. It says they really like damp peat moss covered with moss or tree bark. The cage definitely should have water in it. The air and water temperature and the humidity has some range, so I am sure that your frog's temperature would be fine. I hope this helps.

Yeah it does. I just wasn't sure about keeping them in a tropical environment since they seem to live further east in nature and my frog tank does seem pretty hot for a salamander, but then again at the pet store I'm getting mine from, they also live with the frogs, many of them the same species frogs I have.

I guess I could keep the salamander in with my frogs but I have an extra 10 galleon tank from a failed hermit crab project so I might as well use it, lol.

I also heard they like peat moss and to burrow. I mean you're right, I don't want them living under ground and never seeing them, but I want them to be able to do some of the things they'd do in nature. For the floor, I have a more broken up and more moist type of bedding than I use with my frogs but its pretty much the same material. Its not quite as fine as dirt by any stretch of the imagination but I hope it'll let them burrow.

I'm also putting some gravel in the bottom to absorb any excess water so it doesn't get all swampy.

I'm also gonna fill a shallow Rubber Maid tub with water for it.

As for a hide spot I'm going with sort of a piece of driftwood that if I lay on its side forms a nice little pocket for it to go under. I used it standing up as something for my hermit crabs to climb on, if that helps explain it.

If this goes well I may get a Fire Salamander later on :)

Did you keep anything other then leopard frogs? They're native to Ontario so they're not allowed to be sold here. I guess its a good law to have to help protect some other endangered amphibians but I wish I could buy a spotted salamander or a blue spotted salamander :( I found a spotted one once actually and kept it alive for 2 or 3 yrs :)

I didn't mean you should keep it with your frogs, I just wanted to let you know that it was an option. I see you already knew. :) What you explained sounds really cool. Better than my old set up, so I don't think you need to worry. But just to be safe why don't you see what temperature your pet store keeps them at? Might give you an idea and at least show you what it is used to.

Yeah, I have had more than just leopard frogs, but they are my favorite. I've had various types of tree frogs, bullfrogs and a few other less common types. I have also had several toads. One toad I got was really cool. It could get out of it's cage in the most amazing ways. I found it on the bookshelves, under the couch, in a trash can and more. It always acted lazy during the day, but during the night it turned into a Supertoad or something. :) Off on to the original subject, leopard frogs have definitely been my favorite. I've raised a lot from tadpoles.

Sounds cool about the Spotted Salamander! I've had formally wild animals, too. Sometimes they work out...sometimes they don't. :(

Merry Christmas!

Heehee, yup, you too :)

By the way, my whites tree frog has a bunch of dark green spots on it, almost like a blotch. JUst realized that tonight, but I'm not sure if its had them for a while because I don't usually look at them at night. But do you have any idea what that is and if its bad?

Also, how big an aquarium did you keep your tiger salamanders in?

I don't really know if that is a problem. It doesn't sound like it, but I am not an authority on the matter.

I kept my Tiger Salamander in a 10 gallon tank with 7 (I think) leopard frogs. They had just completed metamorphosis and were very small so they fit in easily. When they got bigger, I had to find new homes for a lot of them.

I don't know how warm your cage gets, but tiger salamanders would probably like it under 70 degrees (Fahrenheit). I imagine white's tree frogs like it it warmer than that generally. But I do think they are pretty adaptable. I just kept my tiger salamander at room temperature. You probably should still check with the store you're getting yours from, though.
