Anyone here have any experience with Remington Model 700? I'm curious if there's a specific caliber or type within the 700 family you prefer. I'm a fan of .30-06 and .308 rifles I've fired, and the .308 XCR Tactical looks like a lot of fun for those challenging 500-yard shots.

One of the guns on my bucket list is the Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308. I don't need it as I have 4 other hunting rifles, but the idea of making tiny 1/2" groups seems like great fun. My brother has one and never shoots it, but won't sell it to me...

What do you want the rifle for? It's kind of like asking what kind of car you should buy; a lot of variables go into what is right for various people.

One of my current favorite all-around Prepper-type rifles is the Ruger American Predator in .308. Can be had for around $450 and is light, accurate, and handy. Will take down anything in the lower 48 and you can find ammo just about anywhere and in a multitude of flavors...

Same goes for the Mossberg MVP for another $150 or so and is more of a survivalist-friendly rifle with iron sights, shorter barrel, and removable magazines...

I hunted elk for many years with a Remington 700 ADL 7mm mag. It was a great gun, straight shooting and super knock down power, they weren't getting away. 160 grain bullet.
I gave it 7mm to my cousin-in-law because he just really likes it. He just got a 5x5 elk with it 2 wks ago, 139 grain bullet. I don't know how good Remington 700 models are today, mine was built in the 1960s.
I've hunted last 15 yrs. or so with a Brownie .243.

I mainly want something I can take to the range for fun. It doesn't need to be ultra-expensive or have every gizmo known to man. I have a .22 Marlin my uncle bought me, but it's not useful for multiple applications, and the guns I buy need to be useful for killing paper or zombies.

By "zombies" I mean it needs to be useful in a survival situation where I might have to hunt for food. I have the knowledge and some limited hunting experience, and have sighted in both .30-06 and .308 rifles for deer and elk. I wouldn't take on an animal bigger than that, because what you shoot has to get field dressed and carted back home. Bears and the like would take too much work.

I do like Mossberg, though I've heard Rugers aren't durable. I'd be shy about getting one.

Thank you all for your replies. In full disclosure, this evening I decided to give the main character of my novel a Remington 700 as his primary weapon in the zombie apocalypse. I've read enough reviews to fake writing the gun into a novel. He's working at urban ranges against some apocalyptic baddies to cover for his pals below who are working with AR-15s.

In the days that I had access to a 1000 yard range, I owned a new Savage Model 10 FP/LE, and later a Remington 700 PSS. Both were in 308 Win., both had adjustable triggers, both were heavy barrel, both had tactical stocks. I shot thousands of rounds through both, almost 4000 through the Savage and almost 2500 though the Remington. The Savage had an all time average of 6-8" groups at 1000, the Remington 8-10". These weren't record breaking groups, but getting down to around 4-5" was too expensive for me, requiring big name custom barrels, premium aftermarket parts, and hours of good smithing.

What I loved about the Savage is that it would shoot sub-MOA with many loads while the Remington would go sub-MOA with just a few. It seemed that the Rem was willing to shoot, but the Savage loved to. I preferred the Savage in every aspect except fit and finish, including its 1:10 twist over the Remington's 1:12.

The icon in those days was 700 and probably still is.
