15 years ago, on September 11th, 2001, four commercial airlines were hijacked. Two of them, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown into the North and South World Trade Center Towers, respectively. American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Then, United Airlines Flight 93, supposedly planned to hit the Capitol building, crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after the passengers fought back against the terrorists. United 93 was the only flight to never reach its target. After the WTC Towers were hit at 8:46am, for the North Tower, and 9:03am, for the South Tower, there was extensive news coverage of the event, beginning moments after the first plane hit. Americans all over the country watched as the two towers burned. It continued until the South Tower collapsed after 56 minutes at 9:59am due to fire-induced structural failure. The North Tower collapsed after 102 minutes at 10:28am, also due to fire-induced structural failure. When the North Tower collapsed, debris fell onto WTC building 7, which caused fires. WTC 7 collapsed at 5:21pm. At 9:42am, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded all civilian aircraft within the continental U.S. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,996 people and the injuries of 6,000+ others. The death toll included 265 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in the World Trade Center and in the surrounding area, and 125 at the Pentagon. Of those who died, there were 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, 55 military personnel, and the 19 terrorists who died in the attacks.
I have a personal connection to September 11th, though it isn't because of the attacks. On September 11th, 2014, Jacob Milo Crookston commited suicide while at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was 15 years old and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived in a military family, moving between Kansas, Georgia, Colorado, and Utah. I knew him when he was in Elementary School while stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was always fun to hang around, and after he moved to Utah months later, I hoped to meet up with him again. I first discovered of his death a full year after it happened. Please keep his family, along with the families of the victims of 9/11 in your prayers.
