I am Irish, but hate St. Patrick's Day. Why? Because it turned into a day when people say four-leaf clovers are good luck, pretend they are Irish, and celebrate Irish pride instead of Christian pride. People say, "Kiss me, I'm Irish!" They drink green beer. Non-Irish people are encouraged to put O' before surnames and say "Top to the morning!" to pretend they are Irish. Kids are taught that day is all about good luck, whether it is from a leprechaun (which is, of course, a fantasy) or finding gold in a pot at the end of a rainbow (also a fantasy) and worst of all, that they should look for rare shamrocks with four leaves (which defies the point of celebrating St. Patrick).

Let me emphasize the last point. The only reason Irish Catholics made a holiday for Saint Patrick - whose death, not birth, was on March 17 - is he used shamrocks to explain God's triune nature. Each leaf on it is totally separate, but they are all the same plant. So any suggestions people would be lucky to find a four-leaf shamrock/clover is devilish. God made all shamrocks with three leaves for this specific purpose. So please remember St. Patrick's Day for what it is: evangelizing those who did not understand the Father (Creator), Son (Redeemer), and Holy Spirit (Sustainer) are three Persons of one God. If you ever find a 4- leaf clover, consider yourself an unlucky person. And please do not kiss any Irish people on Thursday.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

To be clear, I don't care if people in Ireland do silly stuff to celebrate St, Patrick's life as long as they do it in a Biblical way (no fantasies about luck and drinking green beer). If it ever returns to being evangelism with a plant without all the Irish pride nonsense, I want to be alive when that happens.

An actual survey of approximately 7 million clovers found the frequency to be about 5000 to 1, twice the popular probability of 10,000 to 1. According to this survey, the frequency of a five-leaf clover is 24,400 to 1, and of a six-leaf clover is 312,500 to 1.

Just a genetic mutation and hardly "devilish".

The Greek kontakion or hymn to St. Patrick reads
Fourth Tone
The Master revealed thee as a skillful fisher of men; and casting forth nets of Gospel preaching, thou drewest up the heathen to piety. Those who were the children of idolatrous darkness thou didst render sons of day through holy Baptism. O Patrick, intercede for us who honour thy memory.

I said the belief finding shamrocks with more than three leaves is good luck is devilish, not the 1 in 5,000 plants themselves.

Sorry, I misread your comment, that's on me. Personally, I enjoy fun superstitions. I have cornbread, collards, and herring on New Year's day. The rare four leaf clovers I've found are special to me, that one in 5000 chance makes the day special.

In school in America we had the annoying custom of pinching anyone who forgot to wear green. This is widespread.

Also many American Protestants wear orange on St. Patrick’s Day, unaware of the Orange militias and their reciprocal violence to the Provisional IRA which made the two terrorist groups collectively responsible for the Troubles.

Please don't politely demand that my wife refrain from kissing me on March 17th

You can kiss her that day because she is your wife, not because she is Irish.

At no point in my life have I witnessed anyone kiss another person based solely upon the fact that person was Irish.

The media goes crazy telling people they should do it every year.

the media goes crazy on a daily basis about one thing or another. Taking them seriously is a bad idea.
