Hello everyone. I am a 21 y/o girl and I am coming on here to ask for help. I have grown up in an atheist household with a parent and brother. None of my family on this side are religious. However, around a year ago I had an overwhelming feeling and I knew it was a calling from God. Even though I grew up with atheists, I knew God was real and this calling was confirmation for me. I am unsure where to go from here. I want to become a practising Christian and create a better relationship with God but I just don't know where to begin. I've never read the Bible through, so I have set up a plan to do this but this isn't enough. It is very overwhelming at first as I feel like there's so much to learn but I want to learn, I just don't know the best way. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you:praying:

Hi. Welcome to the family. It is good to start reading the Gospel of John. Then read all the other gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke. If possible do visit a local church. There are many people and discussions here that can help you. You can share any questions that you may have with us.

Start by....

1) Getting a Bible and reading it. Most churches here in the US will happily give you an inexpensive paperback Bible free. Books about Christian beliefs and/or the Bible (such as John Stott's "Basic Christianity," "The Normal Christian Life" by Watchman Nee, or "Essential Truths of the Christian Faith" by R. C. Sproul) will help but they do not replace reading and learning the Bible itself. You say it isn't enough and that is true and correct but much is built upon a knowledge of God's word (written and incarnate). I do recommend the use of a devotional. Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest" is a classic but I recommend you get the "updated language" or NIV versions.

2) Praying and telling and asking God about your life. God knows everything already but He wants you relying upon him.... often but without feeling guilty for inconsistency. He's your new Best Friend. Act like it.

3) Finding a (local) congregation in which to fellowship, worship, and develop friendships and learning relationships with other Christians. Denominationalism isn't something that I would ordinarily say someone need be mindful of but I don't know what the Church looks like in England. A conservative evangelical Anglican congregation could be great but the Anglican Church tends to be liberal (I was saved in a conservative charismatic evangelical Episcopal congregation 35+ years ago). Non-denominational congregations may lack external oversight and accountability so there could be problems there. So I'm going to suggest a Baptist congregation simply because the oddsare best. Baptists know their Bible and use it. Ultimately, if you're praying and reading then God will be able to guide your search and you'll end up exactly where God wants you. I recommend you look for a place with a spirit of hospitality and authenticity. Other concerns will become important as you grow but for now look for (healthy) fellowship and (sound) teaching.

4) Getting involved in some form of service either inside the congregation (greeting, Sunday school teaching, ushering, singing, sound desk, etc) or outside the congregation in the surrounding community (food delivery, grate patrol, etc.).

There are other practices that will develop your faith but these four are the most basic and necessary for growth and maturity. There's a wonderful community of believers here in CF but we're not physically present to give you real-time encouragement, exhortation, admonition, and hugs . Do please avial yourself of the wisdom of those who've walked the Christian path before you but always examine what is heard/read with scripture.

And rsj13, you're a woman. You've left childhood and girlhood behind and stepped into adulthood and womanhood and finding your relationship with God is an excellent way for you to do it. You're a member of the better half of our species.

Welcome. I had a bigger family growing up but my dad was an atheist. Somehow I still believed that there was a God. I did not know God until I was 20. I thought I was a Christian. I found out that I was most certainly not. You might like to read the link.

Christianity is a relationship with God through Christ. You get to know someone by spending time with them. It is vital to start the day with time with God. It's good to read the Bible. It's also good to have a notebook to write down anything that impresses you strongly.

If you mean business with God, He will do wonders in your life. You won't see it at first. Your attitudes will change and so will your desires. When you are having hard times (you will), run to God, not away from Him. He loves you enough to send Jesus to die in your place. He is not out to judge you or condemn you should you fail from time to time (everyone does). You are most precious. Put God first in your life and He will lead you and guide you in the way that is best for you.

Hi! There is a woman named Amanda Grace and her youtube channel is called Ark of Grace ministries. She started this series called "Read the Bible with Amanda Grace". She started it this Jan 2020. I haven't watched her Bible reading series but I think she explains it and makes it interesting. So that will be an excellent way for you to start reading and studying the Bible. Till now I haven't seen anyone else doing a Bible reading series (maybe I'm wrong). She started reading from Genesis 1 itself. Here is the link to that 1st video of hers:-

It is good that you are so open and seeking help. Let me counsel you to soon read John 1; John 3; and meditate much on John 14. God will be speaking to you there! You really need to also begin reading daily in all the Gospel books of our Bible ( recommend the sound KJV Book), and then note the Book of Acts as a transition Book from Old testament religion to the fulfilling of God's promises in the New Testament. Then in the various Epistle books to follow you will find Church truth for the believers who embraced the Gospel truths given them. Keep close to God in much prayer for leading, friend.

I’ve just finished my final year at university
OK, thank you.

You need to find a church that puts the New Testament first, and political/social agendas second (or lower). You should study the Bible with them, there's usually a class and/or a small group Bible study that will help you with that. I recommend using the same translation that your church uses, since it is easier to follow along that way. However, if it's strictly KVJ-only, it's toxic.

Now, I'm not sure how the UK is handling the pandemic, but most churches in my area of the US have transitioned to streaming live services. This gives you an opportunity to check out what the church teaches and emphasizes from your home. When our shelter-in-place orders expire, we will transition back to meeting together in the church building, so I would look for a church in your area that will do that too.

If you'd like something more specific for study resources, the Life Change series by The Navigators is good for digging into a specific book of the Bible, I've done several (but not all) of them. They also put out shorter pamphlets/studies, Lessons On Assurance is a good one I have gone through.

Here we go again, ---one bashing the KJV Bible ---calling it "toxic" as Sketcher does. It has been studied by scholars over 300-400 years and is very sound. It does not try to put the words of God in modern worldly language and thereby missing the true intent of God. One can truly read the KJV with confidence they are getting the mind of God and not men. People seeking to make everything simple to appeal to modern interests will miss the intent of God. All Bibles have some errors, for man fails in his efforts in most things. The KJV gives the essential message of God as Bible teachers over many years have attested to; though one can surely read any books they choose. It all depends on what one prefers to hear.

If you want to walk with God through life, a necessary step is to surrender that life to Him. That is, you come to Him, ask Him to show you parts of your life, deeds or thoughts that are not pleasing to Him (sin), repend and ask forgiveness for those specific things and give your life to God deciding to follow Jesus. This surrender is essential in order to hear his voice and learn from Him. Otherwise I would ask Him to help you find a fellowship of christians you can join and learn from. If you feel God wants you to do something, especially in the area of asking others for forgiveness, do it. Humble yourself as he asks you to do because God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble. Grace is very much needed and that is how one opens up the hand of God to release grace into your life....by obeying Him especially in areas that require humblings.

I also have a tip,
This will be a lifelong journey, but know, that the Holy Spirit will always be guiding you.
I don't understand the Bible completely, but my paster said that's why heaven will be beautiful because we will get to spend time with Jesus and ask any question we might have.
I want to welcome you into being a Christian. A Bible would be a great start, and think about getting Baptized! :D
