Hey all, just wanted to discuss the up and coming game Rebel Planet: Orion. It's based on the Biblical figure Enoch, and since there is not much information about him in the Bible, they took the liberty of making a fictional story line for him. It takes place probably 300 or so years before the great flood.

Here's a link to the website. Anybody else pumped up about it?

What kind of rendering are they using for this game. Its doesnt even look like it has bumpmaping. And the models look like they are md2s from the 90s, are they actually even being lit or are they in fullbright?

I dont know why they didnt just use something like sauerbraten. The sauerbraten (cube 2) engine looks ten times as good and its already being made into a rpg so some tools would already be there. Its also open source and it is very good at compressing huge maps.

(that screenshot was taken on a nvidia 6 series card and it is off the engine's website)

Its not like the people who buy this game are going to care about graphics, but come on. They probably made the development alot harder than it had to be as well.

I have no clue why they didn't use that engine. When did it come out? This game started production probably over two years ago. It's been set back, I believe.

It was first released on in may 2004, at least the second Cube engine. The first was not very good and it was released alot earlier.

They update the main engine, there is a cvs as well, about 4 times a year.

All maps are made out of cubes. Cubes can be shaped, textured, sized, and have materials applied to them. The map editor is build into the engine and you can also edit/create maps online with other people. (its like forge for halo 3 except alot better)

Because all maps are made of cubes, their file sizes are extremely small. It runs well on almost any computer from the past 5 years.

The FPS and RPG sections of the game, which are fully playable, are free to download. (see link at end of post) There is also the map editing and multiplayer. The game-play is much like quake, its very fast paced and hectic. Basic editing is simple but adding things like random generation and dynamic worlds takes some knowledge of c and c++.

Link to games website and free download.
